Re: What's the oldest piece of clothing you own?

I just turned 40 this year. I've got a couple of swanky Greatful Dead space your face shirts from when I was a senior in high school that are still quite nice. I break them out on occasion. They did have a 15 year hiatus living in my folks basement when they were out of the rotation.

But my oldest is a genuine horse hide leather jacket that my grand father used to wear when he was a rambunctious young man in the early/mid 1930's. He was a tall well built guy. There is a story about how he rode his horse down to Missouri one night and was friendly with someone else's girl. When he was leaving three guys tried to jump him. He put his back to his horse and way laid into them with his brass knuckles. Legend says he was wearing this jacket that night. After he died in the early 90's we were cleaning out his house. My aunt threw the jacket in a trash can. I didn't know anything about it, but thought it looked cool and retrieved it. It was terribly dried out and took a whole lot of saddle soap to bring in back to life. I've since had it relined and need to have the zipper replaced this fall.

I actually have and still wear my old DARE shirt. Too tired to do the math, but that was fourth or fifth grade and I'm 31 now. I was a very chunky kid.

I have some Zubaz pants in storage just waiting to come back into style. Any day now.

Oh, and I have a Sturgis tshirt I picked up at a garage sale in '96 for fifty cents. It says "This face leaves at midnight, be on it." I wear it when I want to irritate my wife.

Several of my workout shirts/shorts I still wear almost every day are 10+ years old. The oldest thing I actually wear is probably an old Walter Payton jersey my dad bought in the 80's.

I have a coat from the early '90s hanging in my closet. I would wear it, but the liner is ripped up, need to get it redone. Can't think of any regular wear old items.

Re: What's the oldest piece of clothing you own?

The oldest piece of clothing I still wear is an old Mountain Products lightweight down jacket. Old girlfriend gave it to me sometime before 1980 because that was the last time I saw her. I still wear it to shovel snow or for late fall yard stuff because it's the right weight for working in the cold.

I still have lots of race t-shirts from the 1980s when I ran 5k and 10k races. Bix 7 1987 and Victory Memorial 10K 1986 are the oldest.

I have my dad's WWII uniform. Have tried it on and it fits me like it was tailored. Waist, inseam, jacket size = perfect.

Re: What's the oldest piece of clothing you own?

I have a full-length wool jumper in my closet that my mother made for me back in high school. It doesn't fit any more, but I can't bear to part with it. This may only make sense to a few people in here, but she told me to choose the fabric I wanted, and I brought home this beautiful brushed wool in a kind of plaid print of muted amber, brown, tan & gold. The only problem was, the pattern was designed for the fabric to be cut on a bias, and the plaid was not fully square - more like 3 inches by 2.5 inches, and I only bought the yards that the pattern envelope required. My mother very painstakingly laid out each individual piece so that the lines in the plaid all matched up in the seams down the front, sides, back, and across the shoulders. She put so much effort into that dress...and she has been gone since I was 23. I got misty just typing this memory. The dress was made in 1971.

Oldest things that I'd still want to wear are concert T-shirts from the mid 90's, Metallica and Smashing Pumpkins are the best. Sadly they are getting full of holes and the wife give me grief about it.

Oldest that I actually still wear is my intramural t-shirt I won in 2001. I earned that MFer, no way I'll give it up.

I have two that I will never part with myself. Badges of honor.

Hoiberg: I have a unique situation here. I grew up here. I went to college here. My family is close and my wife's family is close. I know everyone in the community and my family is very comfortable here. My daughter has dreamed about one thing and that's going to Iowa State. The NBA is great and I love the NBA, but I love Iowa State and the opportunity I have here. We've really built something special and I think we've got real momentum to keep it going even more.

I just recently had to throw away a Metallica Metal up your *** t shirt. It was awesome with a knife coming out of a toilet.

My grandfather (a cattle rancher in the Texas Hill Country) swore by his Stetsons. He had a felt one for "winter" and a straw one for summer. Both were extremely well worn...he hated breaking in a new hat. :)
