    Salt and Soda

    So, the wife is making me give up salting my food, and cut be back to one Pepsi Maxx per day, on the heals of a little 'incident' I had last week. These are two of my favorite things to consume, as I love salty foods, and nothing is better to me than a cold Pepsi. Anyone else had to make changes like this before? Any tips?

    I had to give up pop and greasy foods quite a while ago due to stomach issues. Now I drink almost exclusively water and milk with meals.

    I don't know of any secret other than just try to make the right decision as often as you can. It took me a while but I felt better after finally doing that. I still have a pop at the theater because it would be wrong not to.

    I've drastically cut back on salt recently. It has made me realize just how salty processed and restaurant foods are. The salt taste is almost overwhelming to the point where I don't like some foods that I used to.

    As far as soda....that's been more difficult to give up. I'm trying to drink water and non-sweetened tea, but a good Mexican Coke still gets me. Diet sodas taste like pure chemicals to me now.

    School's out for the summer, so we can rule out forgetting your kids there.

    This is from my experience only, as I do not have a PhD and I did not stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. I don't think you'll have any trouble kicking the salt habit, or at least insofar as adding extra salt to foods.

    My g/f was notorious for adding salt to food; I've never been one to add salt with a few exceptions (hash brows, fresh green beans, sweet corn). I pressed her to not do it because it seemed to me more than a family habit as opposed to something she actually enjoyed. She put salt on everything and I couldn't even understand how most of the foods she at tasted good after that.

    She stopped doing it a long time ago, now she rarely salts her food. She doesn't miss it at all and it wasn't hard for her to do.

    The soda one? You're screwed. Send me a note when you've figured that one out.

    try replacing salt with other seasonings. More pepper, garlic, oregano, chili powder - things like that which allow you to add flavor without adding salt.

    The pop one will be like breaking an addiction. You'll probably have to do it slowly. Start by replacing sodas at lunch with water or juice. Tell yourself you can't have soda before 11am or after 8pm. Whoever does the grocery shopping - they need to stop buying pop for the house. Either don't order pop when you go out for dinner/lunch or if you just can't handle that, just get one pop to share with your wife. They give free refills anyway and you won't feel like you need to finish your glass. Stuff like that to slowly wean you off of it.

    Mind over matter, but sometimes the mind needs a good solid shove. I got an ulcer when they sent my son to Iraq...doc said I had to give up my "bottomless" can of Coke Classic (among other things) or risk perforation. I've been on water (mostly) for about 9 years now.

    Salt can be replaced with other spices that are less offensive to your circulatory system. Peppers and herbs are good options. The food doesn't have to be bland to be salt free. :)

    I have cut carbs and sugar out of my diet by quite a bit, and you are right it is difficult to eat healthy. you have to assume anything that is processed and pre-made is salty and sugary. I think it is very similar to kicking any addiction. Over time it will fade, but in the beginning make sure and congratulate yourself when you do well and don't let your body talk you into going back.

    Juice is what you have to use to break pop habit, it's sweet so it takes that craving. Find several different types and keep them on hand, juice with multiple flavors tend to do best.

    Juice has almost as much sugar as pop, so I'm not sure that'd really help.
