Re: HOOPS: Why Matt Thomas could be due for a breakout year

I personally think Matt is going to be much better this year than people are thinking.

On a side note, Naz really seems to be turning into quite the leader for this team. I think he and Niang will be the unquestioned leaders of this team for the next two seasons.

Lastly, it is crazy to think of the different lineups Fred will be able to run out there.

    Go Big
    Morris
    Nader
    SDW
    Hogue
    Mackay

    line change!

    3 pt team
    Custer
    Thomas
    Naz
    BDJ
    Niang

Fred is going to really be able to mess with other teams.

I think Thomas goes down as an all time Cyclone great shooter. The guy has all the tools, if he ever truly gets locked in...look out.

It seems to me that if you took 1/4" off of every Thomas shot from last year his shooting percentage would have jumped 10%. Every miss seemed to hit back to front and then pop out.

Re: HOOPS: Why Matt Thomas could be due for a breakout year

Great article, Chris. Out of curiosity, who holds the record for most 3-pointers during their freshman year?

I've been a Matt Thomas fan since he was being recruited and I've never waivered in that even when a lot of people were down on him last season. I've been watching his game at CCL and he looks like he's gained a lot of confidence. I'm really pulling for him to have a big sophomore year. If he and Naz are hitting their stride, wow, we are going to be a very dangerous team.

Re: HOOPS: Why Matt Thomas could be due for a breakout year

The only thing standing in the way of this being a great year for Thomas is the possibility of breakout games by SDW or Custer (or maybe even KJ) during his suspension. If one of those guys pulls a Naz-like game early they're going to get a bunch of minutes that Thomas would otherwise expect to see.

    Gotta be Jake Sullivan.

I am sure he will be less hesitant when firing and will develop some slippery moves to get his shot off. he al;so can shoot the mid range very well. It takes time.

Let my Fred's Posse Ride: Georges, Naz, Hogue, Bryce, Nader, Monte, Matt, and McKay.

If it was anyone other than Jake Sullivan I would be shocked. He had a great freshman campaign for us.

Yeah, I was thinking it was Sullivan as well, but I wasn't sure. I know it wasn't Fred.

Re: HOOPS: Why Matt Thomas could be due for a breakout year

I agree, a lot of people have written Matt off, including myself at times. When you step back and look at his FR season relative to most, he really did very well. He may not be a future lottery pick, but I see no reason why he can't develop into a Melvin Ejim type player.

His arrest didn't help, but if he learns from it, I can see him getting 20 min/game again this season. If he does take that next step, similar to Naz, minutes will be extremely tough to come by after Morris, Thomas, Naz, BDj, McKay, Nader, Hogue, and Niang.

That would leave Custer, Edozie, Georgios and SDW getting mostly spot minutes when there's foul trouble or blowouts.

Either way, our increased depth will hopefully allow us to ratchet up our defensive intensity as well. I think our 2 deep can score with any team in the country so maybe the added depth will allow for greater emphasis on the defensive end as well.

Re: HOOPS: Why Matt Thomas could be due for a breakout year

Great article. I know Matt had a tough 1st year, and many fans didn't help unfortunately, but we all know what he is capable off. Hoiberg has said Matt is one of the best shooters he's ever seen (in practices). That tells me all I need to know about Matt's ability. Hopefully he gets the great fan support the CyclONEnation is known for, and he has a big year this year!.

Re: HOOPS: Why Matt Thomas could be due for a breakout year

You could take Matt Thomas' name out of the thread headline and replace it with just about anybody else on the team, and the headline would still be reasonable.
