In 3 weeks Team USA has only beaten a country with fewer indoor toilets than Dow City. This is the closest she's ever been to being right.

Re: Ann Coulters informed take on Soccer

Read that article the other day.

I do have to say I was pretty impressed at her ability to take things completely unrelated to soccer and make them fit her narrative(kind of). That sort of delusion takes skill.

I don't get where the media is "shoving" soccer down anyone's throat. Really the only outlet that is covering it is ESPN. There has been what, one USA national game on ABC?

There are tons of arguments you could make as to why soccer isn't a huge sport in America, or why people love to hate it: It's not as profitable, the play acting after any contact(though that's becoming pretty popular in Basketball, hockey, and even the NFL now...), but man, what an impressively xenophobic, mysognistic, ******* rant, that didn't touch on any valid points why people do or should hate soccer.

Re: Ann Coulters informed take on Soccer

Holy **** that was terrible. Someone should tell her to stick to things she understands instead of writing an article about something that she clearly has never watched.

Individual achievement is not a big factor in soccer. In a real sport, players fumble passes, throw bricks and drop fly balls all in front of a crowd. When baseball players strike out, they're standing alone at the plate. But there's also individual glory in home runs, touchdowns and slam-dunks.

In soccer, the blame is dispersed and almost no one scores anyway. There are no heroes, no losers, no accountability, and no child's fragile self-esteem is bruised. There's a reason perpetually alarmed women are called "soccer moms," not "football moms."

No individual heroes and no one's self-esteem is bruised? Did she not see any of the matches recently? Is Messi not a hero for his late goal, or John Brooks, or Julio Cesar, etc? She should read up about Andres Escobar if she thinks no one's self-esteem is bruised or Diego Maradona if she thinks there are no heroes. And the soccer moms comment is hilarious. They're called soccer moms because they drive vans/SUVs full of kids to soccer tournaments every weekend, not because of self-esteem issues.

The prospect of either personal humiliation or major injury is required to count as a sport. Most sports are sublimated warfare. As Lady Thatcher reportedly said after Germany had beaten England in some major soccer game: Don't worry. After all, twice in this century we beat them at their national game.

Baseball and basketball present a constant threat of personal disgrace. In hockey, there are three or four fights a game and it's not a stroll on beach to be on ice with a puck flying around at 100 miles per hour. After a football game, ambulances carry off the wounded. After a soccer game, every player gets a ribbon and a juice box.

Clearly she has never seen the gruesome injuries in soccer, or the fact that players routinely get injured. Why that is necessary for it to take off in the US, I don't know (other than she's a ******* idiot), but there are plenty of injuries in soccer just like any other sport. And again, about humiliation, just look at the faces of players in the WC when they miss the deciding PK or get sent off with a red card. They're devastated and will only get worse when they return to their home country.

You can't use your hands in soccer. (Thus eliminating the danger of having to catch a fly ball.) What sets man apart from the lesser beasts, besides a soul, is that we have opposable thumbs. Our hands can hold things. Here's a great idea: Let's create a game where you're not allowed to use them!

    Lol wut?

Soccer is not "catching on." Headlines this week proclaimed "Record U.S. ratings for World Cup," and we had to hear again about the "growing popularity of soccer in the United States."

The USA-Portugal game was the blockbuster match, garnering 18.2 million viewers on ESPN. This beat the second-most watched soccer game ever: The 1999 Women's World Cup final (USA vs. China) on ABC. (In soccer, the women's games are as thrilling as the men's.)
Run-of-the-mill, regular-season Sunday Night Football games average more than 20 million viewers; NFL playoff games get 30 to 40 million viewers; and this year's Super Bowl had 111.5 million viewers.

Funny how she only uses American football TV ratings but doesn't compare it to any NBA or MLB ratings from this season (because they do not match the US-Portugal ratings). No one is arguing that American football is more popular, but it's clearly catching more people's attention than the biggest NBA or MLB games do (the Finals and World Series do not get those type of ratings).

I'm not even going to comment on all her political remarks since I don't want to make this thread political, but only a ******* idiot like her would try to spin in as many political comments as she did for why soccer will not take off in the US.

I can play this game as well. Ann Coulter is un-American because she does not support the UNITED STATES national team. Ann is obviously a Cuban-loving, communist because they did not make it to the World Cup but they do have an excellent national baseball program.

Well she does love herself some baseball, but apparently she has no idea what the rosters look like these days or she'd be suggesting that they are too filled up with foreign invaders.

" Soccer is like the metric system, which liberals also adore because it's European. Naturally, the metric system emerged from the French Revolution, during the brief intervals when they weren't committing mass murder by guillotine."

As opposed to the English system we use today where our measure of length is based on some king's thumb centuries ago. Wanting this country to pull their heads out of their *** and conform to the rest of the world does not make one adore Europe.

There are plenty of left wing idiot nut jobs on Coulter's level. No argument there.

The difference is that none of them have anywhere close to her audience.

That was maybe my favorite point because soccer doesn't use the metric system. Somehow fitting the "metric-system is un-american" argument into an anti-soccer bit when soccer is the only thing that actually makes the whole world know what a yard is... impressively asinine.
