Hilton was a university president, not a sponsor of basketball . . . but since you are on this site, you probably already knew that!

Depends on your definition of "no one" ...

Also: I hope you are starting off in the dorms. It is a great way to make friends right away. Some of the people you meet on the day you move in will be your closest friends after you graduate. Do a year in the dorms (two max) and then get into an apartment.
To add to the dorm advice...when you are home and don't mind getting bothered, leave your door open. That's a good way to meet your neighbors and other people in your floor/house. Also attend the meetings and social activities and sign up for intramural teams.

Find the times of the breakfast/lunch/dinner rushes in the cafeteria. Arrive before those rushes.

Same goes with doing laundry. When I was there, I had no issue with getting washers/dryers in the morning. I'd throw my laundry in, shower/shave/****/whatever, transfer to the dryer, go eat, get the clothes out before class.

I used to give some tours, and I've since forgotten basically everything I learned except for this joke. I never actually told it on tours, though, because it's just so incredibly lame.

Former tour guide here as well. I did tell that joke. Maybe 5-10% of the students would chuckle at it. Near 100% of the dads, though.

Kraps, what's with your site name? It isn't a standard ISU/Cy-derived one.

Could not agree more with this. Meet some different people, one of the most mind-expanding things you can do in college years. This is 100x more important if you are from a small town or never been outside Iowa or midwest.

Follow on tip: if you are not naturally super social (e.g. engineers) then leave your door open the first week so social people come and say hi. Worked for me. Was given a beer within 30 minutes of my folks dropping me off (Beast light).

Go to lots of house parties
    Meet a lot of people
Don't skip class too much; it affects your grade more than you think (speaking from experience. Woo academic probation!)
Go to lots of basketball and football games
    Bang lots of *******
    Smoke weed everyday

This has been touched on by another guy but whatever you have for a meal plan, go at least one level down. You won't eat there on the weekends and won't want to eat there twice a day. 10 is the max I'd recommend.

    Re: ISU Tidbits?

If you take English 150 there is a good chance that you will take a tour of one of the museums or the Art on Campus. If you don't, take a second to check out the Farm House Museum, Christian Petersen Art Museum (Morrill Hall), and/or the Brunnier Art Museum (Scheman), on your own. There are a couple of good reasons for this; the staff at the museum has some great campus stories (I am one of them, and love telling stories), it's always good to add a little culture to your life, and you can impress your folks on parent and family weekend. :)

Note to newcomer: the hall directly inside the Zodiac leading into the MU is engraved with Gold Star Iowa Staters. Remember that, and respect that.

If possible, arrive before classes start, take some time with a map to go locate the classrooms & lecture halls where your classes will meet. Two buildings on campus that have crappy room numbering systems are Gilman Hall (Chemistry) and Agronomy Hall (self-explanatory). There may be others. It's not enough to just find the buildings. FIND THE ROOMS INSIDE THE BUILDINGS!!!!

Lago was bad too. And Kildee, even though it was my home. Saw so many wandering newbies in that building. Thank God Lush was easy enough for them to find.
