2012 movie Sinister, starring Ethan Hawke

It's on one of the premium cable channels right now. It's creepy as ****. I liked it.

Agree, one of the best scary movies made, and my first exposure to Stephen King. The book scared the crap out of me!

Sounds awesome. Where'd you watch this? Is it on netflix or available to stream?

Re: Do they make scary movies anymore?

I'll have to agree with posters mentioning The Thing by John Carpenter. The movie builds up tension effectively, has a few scary jumps thrown in for good measure, and the whole time has you trying to figure out who you can trust or not. I think most of the effects hold up incredibly well today. I'm a bit of a Carpenter freak, love all his movies. If you ever have a chance to watch the special edition, there are some awesome interviews that shine some light into how the movie was made (the special effects guy was hilarious), I greatly recommend it.

I also played the video game for the movie that came out for the original Xbox and it was a blast! You're basically in charge of the team that goes back to Antarctica to see what happened after the movie. It is a squad based game and you can have party members be the alien and turn at any time, build trust with your team members by giving them better weapons, etc. I also highly recommend it!

There is a cooler in a lab down the hall at work that has an alarm that make this highpitched "reeeepreeepreeep" sound when they have the door of it open for too long. Every time it goes off I want to peek around the corner and see if there are any giant ants down there.

Kudos to whoever gets that reference...one of my all-time fave B-movies. :)

Effects, yeah - cultural images, not so much. You have to laugh at the chess game at the beginning, and Rawls with his boom box! ;)

Horror movies are tough because people have way different ideas of what scares them. I think Exorcist and Halloween are really two of the best horror movies but my friends think they are awful...yet think something like The Purge is the scariest thing in the world while I think it's not.

To ME, the scariest movies of the past decade are The Conjuring, The Descent, Insidious, and 28 Days Later

Yeah, it was on Netflix. I think it was originally like a four or five part miniseries, with how it seemed broken up over the 4 hours.

There's no holding back either. Wes Craven openly discusses how he feels the franchise was taken after the first movie up until his chance to try to redeem it with New Nightmare.

Re: Do they make scary movies anymore?

Honestly, I'm starting to think I just have something wrong with me and can't get scared by movies. The only movies I remember making me scared are movies when it was a kid, and re watching those don't scare me these days. I've seen all of those mentioned so far, and while some were well made, none stayed with me after watching. The Descent terrified me, but because I'm claustrophobic. Once the caves opened up more and the monsters came out, I lost my fear.

I'm not afraid of torture or "gore porn" personally. Eli Roth type films or Saw. What I like is supernatural type movies. Ghosts and things that go bump in the dark. But again, they don't stay with me after it's ended. They're just enjoyable to watch because of the ambiance.

    Maybe I'm just broken?

Re: Do they make scary movies anymore?

Exorcist and The Shining are 2 of the all time greats for sure.

Rob Zombie's Halloween remakes are great, IMO.

The Conjuring and Insidious are good too. Insidious really felt like a modern Poltergeist. Speaking of which, Poltergeist is being remade and will be out in 2015. That movie scared the hell out of 9 year old me.

There are more than these, but these are the ones that come to mind without a lot of thought.
    Jaws
    The Thing (Carpenter)
    Alien
Night of the Living Dead (original)
    Carrie (original)
    The Shining (original)
    The Exorcist
The Descent [more gory than the others...it's the tension between the "friends" that makes it memorable, not the action]
The Birds [This one is kind of hokey by today's standards, but the first time I saw it, my parents & sisters were out for the evening; I was home alone (I was about 12 at the time). When my family came home, I was huddled in a blanket in the family room, clutching Bessie (my stuffed dog I've had since birth). When the starlings flock on campus in the evenings, it's VERY unnerving to me still!]
Impressed that you refer to The Thing as "Carpenter" instead of "original." Most people think that one was the original.

Nothing impressive there...I'm almost as old as the original with James Arness! ;)

My worst nightmare plays out in a scene of Brokeback Mountain and Deliverance.

I just watched Cabin in the Woods. While I wouldn't call it a horror movie (although it's classified as that) and it didn't scare me whatsoever, I still rather enjoyed it. It was a good shot at the horror movie fans who get so angry if a horror movie doesn't end exactly how they expect it to. Loved the message of the movie.

I just think a lot of it has to do with growing up. I enjoyed Insidious and the Conjuring but once they are over I am over it. Stuff that scared me when I was much younger isn't going to do it anymore.

One of the things that gets me is so many people feel the need for some comic relief in a horror movie to break the tension. I am just the opposite, I want tension to build and build until you get one little sound or movement and you jump like a little sissy.
