Yes and no. There weren't any offers yet, but if the Heat really are bringing the Big 3 all back, there are lots of suitors with cleared out cap room and they can't all sign Carmelo. I think Washington wanted to get this done before the other shoe dropped on the big names and a bunch of team's were suddenly looking to overpay guys.

If all of that were to happen then I understand the logic of wanting to get the deal done early. But why not three or four years? If they sign Ariza to a four or five year deal then what they have now is what they have for at least the next few seasons. And what they have now looks like a mediocre team in a mediocre conference.

It was a tough spot for the Wizards because their options were to bring back the core and hope like hell that Wall and Beal keep improving or allow someone else to overpay Gortat and Ariza and rebuild around Wall and Beal. To placate their fanbase I understand why they felt they had to overpay. But the contract length is no good.

Only team that can offer a 5-year deal, by far their biggest bargaining chip. I'm sure they tried to get him to bite on a shorter deal first. Does anyone know how the deal is structured? If more of the guaranteed money is in the first few years it might not be as bad.

Zach Lowe covers the Gortat signing on Grantland today, pretty much what has been discussed here, very solid player who the Wizards may have overpaid because they were worried about another team stealing him away, Wizards owner doesn't want to take a step back next year.

To sum up that article, every NBA free agent that has signed a contract so far this year has been overpaid.

Well they are all getting paid to play a sport so...

Also, Zach Lowe is awesome even if some of his more technical game film breakdown goes over my head.

It looks like the Cavs want to keep up that trend by offering Gordon Hayward a max deal:

Is there anyone left in the Cavs' front office from the mid 2000's? Maybe they're just trying to **** over Utah to get back at them for how the Carlos Boozer deal went down?

I don't get how Hayward fits in with what Cleveland is trying to do. Wouldn't Wiggins and Waiters be getting the bulk of the starter wing minutes? Maybe they're looking to deal Waiters.

Irving and Hayward is a disaster defensively if they are trying to play Hayward at two.

Pacers signing CJ Miles at 4/$18M means they are basically out on Lance unless they move one of their big money guys.

Ouch. I'm still holding out hope that they can move George Hill but it's not likely. Not much of a market for a PG who can't really create for his teammates that well but at least shoots a poor percentage from three. Oh, and he's only on the hook for 24 million over the next three seasons.

I'm sure he will be at the 3 with Wiggins and Waiters at 2.

So much for Patty Mills getting a Gary Neal type of payday. The Spurs will get him at a bargain, stash him until February or March and have him at full speed for the playoffs.

Wiggins doesn't have the handle to play much 2 yet, but either way they're going to be asking him to carry a huge load defensively alongside Irving and Hayward.
