Re: In Car kiddo entertainment...DVD/Other options?

If you did go the DVD route I would see if you have friends/neighbors who you could borrow DVD's from (maybe even a portable system) or check your local library. We can check out 10 DVD's at a time for a week and then renew them if needed. DVD's could be a very low cost option if you borrow.

1.5 is the tough one because they don't sleep automatically anymore and they don't really entertain themselves yet. We drive home to Minnesota A LOT and when our son was in that age range we did one of two things:

-Whoever wasn't driving sat in the back with him so they could nip any crabbiness in the bud
-We drove at night. At dinner at home and put our departure time as close to his bed time as possible so he'd sleep.

Don't know how applicable either of those are to your road trip situation.

hell, even redbox wouldn't be that expensive and you can just swap them out at all your gas stops so you don't have a big stack of DVD's cluttering up your car.

Damn, didn't know this was an option. My kids used 3GB of my phone's data plan on our last 3 hour trip. Didn't think that was even possible.

    Read to them.
    Talk to them.
Have the 5 year-old make up stories.
Work on his vocabulary (not the cusswords) seeing how much he can name.
    Coloring books. Drawing pad.
    Sing songs.
Consider cutting out long road trips until it's more age-appropriate.
Leave the 1 1/2 year-old with Grandpa and Grandma.

    Anything but mind-numbing video/screen-time, for God's sake.

Watching a couple hours of something on a long car trip isn't going to stunt development or ruin kids.

Run to the Dollar Store and get some puzzles, cheap dolls or cars, markers. Keep them in a bag in the front seat, and give them a new "surprise" every couple of hours. Hopefully the novelty will help keep them busy.

Different issue, but still brilliant: I was talking to a relative at a graduation party a couple weeks back who has kids around the same age. He said instead of packing up a bunch of the kids toys when they visit grandparents and the like, they just start looking for garage sales along the route as soon as they get into town and buy like$5 of crap they don't worry about losing or packing back up. Kid loves it because he gets a "new" toy.

Re: In Car kiddo entertainment...DVD/Other options?

We still use our portable DVD player along with for-the-love-of-god headphones. Red box and the library are great cheap options if you don't have DVD's already. Also, just bring enough movies to cover the duration of the trip. My wife thinks we need to bring our whole collection on a 8 hour trip.

The 1.5 year old will be a challenge, but I'd be really surprised if sleep doesn't occupy a ton of their time.

I'd also burn a cd or two of their favorite songs. Coloring books are great for the older kid, but you'll just be playing pick-up with the young one.

Seems to me that if you have to show a movie during a two-hour trip because you can't stand little kids behaving as little kids, there's something wrong with the situation.

Little kids shouldn't have to have ANY screen time. They're little kids. Why not teach them that the world is broad and wide, instead of flat and shiny?

Of course, your mileage may vary and it probably does.
