It will be nice to have someone tall at DE...seemed like last year all the receivers were head & shoulders taller than our defense.

Re: RECRUITING: Two-sport star commits to the Cyclones

I know that people can play DE at 215 (I believe Reggie Hayward came in at 6-5, 215 and had to bulk up from there.) but to survive and be effective in the Big 12 he will have to put on some serious good weight. It sounds like he already is working on that. That kind of length will certainly be nice to have on the edge.

With a redshirt he's over 2 years from seeing the field at ISU. I think he will be fine.

Exaggeration is a BILLION times worse than understating.

The good thing is we aren't talking about a kid on signing day who is 215. He has lots of time throughout his entire Sr year and likely a red-shirt year to add to that frame.

Edit: Warts beat me to it

I'm impressed with Anthony's father. Very good attitude to support his son. That is a real father.

Agreed. By next summer if he comes in around 230-235 then he has done great work and put himself in good position weight-wise as a Freshman. Here are a few of our last DE's weights they came in at and what they are at now.

    J.D Waggoner: recruit weight: 6'2 230 Current weight: 6'2 247
Mitch Meyers: recruit weight: 6'4 241 After RS year: 6'4 253 and Current Weight: 6'4 262
    Correy Morrissey: Out of JUCO 6'4 248 After year 1: 6'4 249 and Current Weight: 6'4 260

Morrissey obviously knew he had to put on weight for this year after a few years undersized, but as you can see both Meyers and Waggoner put on significant weight in their first year and i expect waggoner to put on a little more weight like Meyers did after that RS year.

This shows that (even though he is 6'7) he can be around 245-250 after his RS year if he comes in at 230. That would be nice size for a RS FR at 6'7 250

I laugh every time I read posts like this every time a linemen commits. The vast majority have to bulk up before college, because you know they are young kids in HS. Of course he has to put in weight, of course he's going to put on weight. It's a non issue, he will RS like most everyone else and likely won't see the field much as a RS freshman after that either. That's typically how football works.

So is he going to play basketball as well as football?

Of course most of them have to put on weight. But for 6-6 or 6-7 215 is very light, even for high school. If this thread were in the basketball thread there would be concerns posted regarding his weight - for a DE, the concerns are a little more real.

Let's just hope he doesn't have a problem putting on weight.

Not to be a cynic, but why wouldn't he support his son? Would guess any dad would be beyond supportive, but rather overjoyed to have his son commit to a D1 football program.

I would disown any kid of mine that went to Iowa for school/athletics
