Re: OT: Sequels that are better than the first movie

Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior
    Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome

The original is great, but those two are better. One of the few trilogies that holds up all the way through.

Toy Story 2, Toy Story 3

    The Army of Darkness

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (given I actually like TMP, a lot, but this one is just awesome)

Isn't The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly technically a sequel? All three are good. Another one of those threepence where they all work.

The Silence of the Lambs is technically a sequel, too, I guess, kind of, even if I consider Manhunter under-appreciated.

Temple of Doom was kinda meh, but Last Crusade is WAY better than Raiders.

I did enjoy Manhunter a lot. I really liked Red Dragon a lot, even though it came out after Hannibal even - there were some really great performances in that. It's probably my favorite of the Hannibal movies.

But if one is looking to watch for over the top cheesiness, gotta go with 2. You're right though, storyline in pt 1 better...and Jean Claude is in it. :)

I don't think you can consider Silence of the Lambs (movie version) a sequel. I know that the book is a sequel to the book on which Manhunter was based, but the intent with Silence was to make a stand-alone movie, not a follow-up to the previous adaptation. I don't think they were even made by the same studio, were they?

Same thing with all the various Jack Ryan adaptations out there, only the Harrison Ford ones should really be considered as connected movies, even though they are all adapted from connected books.

I still think Raiders is a step above the two original sequels, but I will absolutely defend Temple against people who dismiss it as the obviously inferior part of the trilogy.

    This.

It's more like a 1a, 1b thing - with the original only marginally better.

The evolution of Michael in the original was fantastic. James Caan was great, as was Brando. The Michael story in the second movie wasn't as good IMO, but the evolution of Vito was probably the best part of the entire story.

I guess I'm the only one not blown away by Empire as well.

Never really occurred to me until I read it elsewhere - but I'd have to say Dark Knight was better (ever so slightly) than Batman Begins.

Kate Capshaw cast in Temple of Doom because her husband was the director--Steven Spielberg

If you watch that film again--she is horrendous. Terrible

She runs around whining the whole film...."INDEEEEEEEEE !!!!!!!!"
She really sucked. The little Asian kid Short Round stole the show

We are on the same page for the Dark Knight, but the Ghostbusters statement is bordering on blasphemy.

Re: OT: Sequels that are better than the first movie

I thought Clerks II was a much better all-around movie than the original Clerks. Don't get me wrong, I loved Clerks at the time and truly appreciate what Kevin Smith created. He had just finely tuned his craft by the time Clerks II was released and wasn't restricted anymore financially.

I'm also going to go out on a limb here and say that Wayne's World 2 is better than the original as well. I may be alone on this one but that's how I feel.

Ugh, you must also be one of those people that thinks making a Ghostbusters 3 movie is a good idea.
