Excellent move. Just another young guy that can relate it recruits better and he also has NBA connections. I'd previously heard he's and X's and O's genius and Fred said today that he's the brightest young basketball mind he's ever been around, which I think says a hell of a lot. Especially since I'm assuming after seeing Lutz and Sadler get jobs and seeing how special Iowa State is becoming we could have easily pulled in an experienced coach. Also it seemed like everyone connected to Iowa State the last few years was tweeting him too so it seems like everyone loves the guy which is also a big bonus.

He clearly wants his legacy to be his "coaching tree" - what you always hear about Dean Smith or (ad nauseam from iowa) Hayden Fry.

So he's bringing in fresh faces, molding them, turn them into the hottest prospects in collegiate basketball. Then after Fred has completes his x-peat national championship run at ISU, his minions will continue on dominating March Madness - of course with us keeping the best of the bunch.

So this hire should put to rest any further talk of Fred to the NBA.

This is rather 'spinny' to say the least. lol

Freds grooming him as a replacement for when he goes to the NBA next year.

    Results matter.

As far as depth goes though, the combination of White, Woodbury, Olaseni, Basabe, and Uthoff is much better than Niang, Ejim, Edozie, Gibson. Not because of the top 2, but because of the next 2 or 3. -DeanVogs

Fred has already absorbed what he needs from Sadler, not to say I wouldn't still like him here. Time to get some new blood in.

Re: Official: Charlie Henry named assistant hoops coach

What it comes down to is recruiting. Fred seems to love it. Hiring young guys that know how to go out and connect with kids seems to be big to Fred. At this point I think Fred knows how to coach enough and doesn't need that experience on the bench any more. Let these young guys go out and recruit.

I'm not so sure I'd call them misses either.

Sledge at least I think we likely grew the talent around them faster than maybe expected. At the point we brought him in I would have expected him to contribute, but we really ratcheted up the talent around him.

Bluford a little similar but yeah probably a miss.

    A couple thoughts regarding Henry....

    1) I think this shows Fred is getting very comfortable in his position. The Lutz and Sadler hires were all about getting an experienced guy to help bridge the gap with his lack of experience. Fred seems like a guy that does a great job assessing himself and his capabilities. This hire to me says, "All right I got this now, I can bring in some bright young thinking that can help continue to innovate on our approach."

    2) In regards to Henry seems a lot like the Fred hire. Lots of upside and potential. The nice thing here though is if it's a flop I doubt it's going to have that much negative impact. Recruiting is probably the main question mark and the way we are set up with the influx of transfers I'm not sure that matters.

Anyone know how the roles of the staff would develop? I assume Henry isn't going to just jump right into the Doc role and there will be some shuffling of responsibilities.

Re: Official: Charlie Henry named assistant hoops coach

Not to be a Debbie Downer but am worried that we will regress with our on the ball defense, no offence to Charlie and not withstanding our rim protection will be better with McKay. We saw the defensive improvement right away under Sadler in his only season.

Using an analogy, the Houston Rockets defense improved greatly under Jeff Van Gundy/Tom Thibodeau. When Rick Adelman became coach, the defense slipped. The offense was better, but the same players got beat off the dribble more, lost their guy more around screens, and got out of position more than under Van Gundy. Of the concern that the defense would regress under Adelman prior to his tenure, the local talk radio experts said that the players wouldn't forget how to play defense they learned under Van Gundy. It didn't turn out like they said.

Saying all of that, I put my faith in Fred.

I believe Cornell is a defensive guy, am I right? He likely had some say even when Doc was here so maybe he gets more?
