The structure is valued at zero, the assessed value is solely the land value. Buildings have not been assessed for about 10 years, so my assumption would be this tower doesn't even work anymore.

Those towers probably were for "normal communication". The one in the OP looks like a microwave link tower. They carried telephone calls and various other data, including TV network broadcasts. Satellite communications supplanted these.

As a kid, I would tune in to watch a favorite network show, only to hear that the station was on local programming because a microwave link was down in some neighboring state. Everybody downstream of the broken link was hosed.

There used to be one very similar, but not as tall, in downtown Ames years ago. I'm not sure when it was taken down - early 90s, maybe?

    (maybe)

my gramps farmed the land around that place, he said it was a tv tower (60's-80's), dunno a lawyer owned the farmland around the tower. There was also an abandoned farmhouse on that property with sheds too, its southeast of Collins

This thread has "Urban Exploring" potential.

There used to be a huge steel microwave tower in the middle of downtown Fort Dodge but they removed it last year. It had been inactive for a while now but I guess it is a major insurance liability to leave a tower that large in existence when it isn't being used. Here is a video of them taking it down.

There is a large communication tower Northwest of Ames on Highway 17 that used to be the main communication link between North, South, East, and West for the US. It was literally the main link in communication for the country. Even more amazing is there is a large underground bunker directly under it in case of nuclear attack. It contained essential communications for the US as well as a hospital, barracks, and other facilities. If you look on the Northeast side of the hill underneath it you can see an entrance hidden behind rocks.

No kidding?! I have driven past that tower literally hundreds of times and didn't realize it was that significant. I'm definitely going to check out that entrance the next time I drive past it. Thanks for sharing! How did you find all of this stuff out about it?
