Why ruin a perfectly good snicker salad with a disgusting thing like diced apples? Gross. If I take any, I pick the apples out, but usually I just skip that salad.

My go-to is broccoli slaw salad. Easy to throw together and most people seem to like it, even if they've never had it before.

The wife hates Snickers so we make them with Milky Way. I do agree that Snickers is way better.

We have a neighborhood party once a year. We usually bring a seven layer mexican dip for appetizer or scotcheroos for dessert, then either cheesy potatoes or three-bean baked beans.

It's always shrimp with homemade cocktail sauce. A couple bags of frozen shrimp thawed in water overnight and then the sauce. It's amazing the compliments I get on the sauce because nobody understands how easy it is to make. Squirt ketchup in a bowl and add creamy horseradish sauce. Boom!

Never buy the crappy pre-packaged shrimp trays that come with sauce. The shrimp is awful typically and the sauce is disgusting.

I usually end up hosting these sorts of events... Last time, we went whole berkshire hog of the 100 lb variety (small for a whole hog). We named him Gaston, and cooked him in my La Caja China... Was awesome. Fed 30 people twice, with enough leftovers to vaccuum pack and freeze and feed the same 30 people again if we wanted.

FYI the effing charcoal cost as much as the hog.

Working in the tech field most of the people are guys so a potluck usually ends up with 5 packages of store bought cookies, 15 bags of chips, a vegetable tray and the company supplies hot dogs/hamburgers.
We'll get one or two actual homemade things.

Re: Friday OT #2 - Food Day!

Every now & again when hubby wants to treat his crew, he makes a big pan of cornbread and has me whup up a big mess of Texas Strawberries. That's pinto beans, for those of you who've never had the pleasure. Soaked in water overnight, flavored with garlic, onion, cayenne, chili powder, tobasco sauce & bay leaves then simmered for 3-4 hours with meaty smoked hamhocks. When the meat falls off the bones, I pull the bones out, and tear the meat into smaller pieces & throw it back in the pot. Served with fresh homemade cornbread...mmmmmmm.

Most of the guys would go for seconds or thirds...the first time. After that, they know better. The spices burn on the way in AND the way out... ;)

For fancier folk, I take a big round German black bread loaf, cut a circle out of the top crust and pull out bitesize pieces of the soft insides. I refill the bread bow with homemade spinach dip, put the crust cap back on & chill it over night. Served with the bread bites for dipping.
