Your permit to carry circumvents these restrictions. If I am headed to the range, I will have my magazines loaded. Without my permit, I would not be allow to travel that way.
I was specifically talking about gun safety practices, not the law.

    Re: Permit to Carry Firearm

Why can't we discuss handguns without people interjecting their opinions on whether people should carry or not? It would be cool if we could have a thread that discusses various issues concerning firearms without it being sent to the cave.

That's your opinion that is stupid, I understand that and I'm okay with it. I have been handling guns for over ten years and grew up hunting almost every species in Iowa with the family and still do. Its not like I leave it loaded and in my truck year round, its still turkey season and I still have a tag to fill. I live outside of town around no small children and the truck is typically locked when a gun is inside. The safety has to be pushed off and the trigger has to be pulled and the gun has to be pointed at someone for it to hurt someone. As the gun sits now the only thing it would hurt if it went off would be my passengers floorboard or transfer case. I bet you'd be surprised how many loaded shotguns are riding around in the country side during Iowa's shotgun deer season. . . Carry on.

    Re: Permit to Carry Firearm

What I am saying is that part of having a carry permit is passing a class on gun safety AND following what was learned.

From the NRA, they have 3 basic gun safety rules:

    1. ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.
    2. ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
    3. ALWAYS keep the gun unloaded until ready to use.

    training.nra.org/nra-gun-safety-rules.aspx

If you are not willing to follow basic gun safety, you shouldn't have a carry permit.

Stop already. No one cares about your opinion on this subject. You think gun owners are generally irresponsible and that's great.

okay.... apparently quoting the NRA is too much for some people.

That is incorrect. I've never said that. I think stupid people are irresponsible, and I think a lot of people are stupid. Some of those people are gun owners.

The fact that there are irresponsible gun owners should be a given. I don't see how that is debatable.

You are right, though the irresponsible ones are generally the ones illegally owning the firearms.

While the process is standardized across the state, there is still some variation in how each county does it. Some counties give you a laminated or a plastic ID card. Story Co gives you a paper that you would need to fold to keep with you. Dallas County makes you wait about 30 minutes to get your card. Story Co takes about as long as they are allowed (which is 30 days).

Nothing you can do about it. I just wish it was similar to how other counties do it.

I don't see how anyone could really quantify that with evidence.

Not if there are "tons" of people driving around Iowa with loaded shotguns in their pickups. I would have thought deer hunters generally legally owned their guns (and I would have thought experienced hunters knew better).

    Re: Permit to Carry Firearm

Always kept our shotguns unloaded when not hunting. Family was always a stickler for gun safety. The worry wasn't about you, but rather that someone else would pick the gun up later and assume it was unloaded (you are supposed to assume every gun is loaded as another basic gun safety guideline).

    Re: Permit to Carry Firearm

I'd love to stick around but I'm gonna go hop in the truck and loop a few sections / glass a few properties my family farms and I have permission to hunt to look for some birds to hunt off the roost tomorrow. (And yes, I'm 100% serious)

    Re: Permit to Carry Firearm

I have never encountered an instance that I would have needed a concealed weapon and I feel far less safe knowing that people around me are carrying concealed weapons.
