    Re: Permit to Carry Firearm

I'll say this. If you decide for some odd reason that you need to carry a gun in IOWA make sure and hide it from the general public. My wife works in an office where someone came in last week with a shoulder holster over a t shirt. She literally thought she was going to get shot. Truly a terrifying thing for many people to see in public when someone walks into a store or office with a gun. Some people are just freaking clueless as to how that affects people. Frankly, nobody should be able to carry a gun in public outside of law enforcement if you ask me...but that's another thread.

I don't always carry, but when I do, it's definitely concealed. People that feel a need to open carry are not smart and are opening themselves up to many negative possibilities.

If you were honorably discharged from the military, all you need to do is bring proof of that to the sheriff's office.

Well, I'm glad you keep it concealed. Not hard to see I'm still livid over this ******* that walked into my wife's office. Not a very stable guy either to be honest, not dealing with full mental capacity if you get my drift. If people want to carry weapons they should themselves make it more difficult to get so that wacko's and people not mentally fit to carry are weeded out. Because at this point you could walk in with a straight jacket on and get the permit.

    Re: Permit to Carry Firearm

Sounds like it's easier to get yours in Iowa than it is in Texas. I believe my Texas permit is good for carry in Iowa as well (reciprocity!).

As for the open carry thing, you can do it, but I wouldn't advise it. If you're in a situation where you might have to use it (i.e. holdup at a gas station), you become a convenient "first strike" target for the bad guys.

There are online classes you can take as well.

I don't understand why some people think they have to show it off. Hide the damn thing if you feel the need to carry it. I know law enforcement that carry all the time, and they always keep it hidden, if they can keep it hidden so can everyone else.

Mine will be hidden, the only times you will see my weapon is when I am going to use/ fire it. Whether that is hunting, target shooting, or defense.

Sorry to hear about your wife's encounter. People like that make us law abiding citizens look bad, which sucks!

What is the purpose of carrying a loaded handgun on your person at all times? I'm not trying to be an ***, that's a serious question. I guess I just don't see the need.

The Utah one is the one to get. From what I understood, if you get that one you can carry in like 33 other states.

Otherwise I agree with the other posters. Almost scary easy to get a permit.
Cyfan92 - CCW Holder here, and I took the class from the above instructor so I'll 2nd this suggestion. I have several friends that have taken the class from Legal Heat (referenced above), and thought it was a good class. I live in Story County and once you have the necessary paperwork gathered, it takes 15 minutes to get your card at the County Sheriff's Office. You have the choice between a paper copy or a laminated card similar to your driver's license (for an extra $5).

Let me know if you have any more questions.

I don't get the need to be armed all the time either. But concealed weapons don't bother me so much - like you said, not flashing it about.

All I ask of weapon permit holders is not to be some a-hole who thinks the permit gives him/her the right to do whatever, go where ever and be an arse to businesses who don't want guns on their premises.

    Re: Permit to Carry Firearm

Our next president Mr Rick Santorum was on the Sunday morning news shows recently. The topic turned to the new gun laws in Georgia which make it ok to carry a gun into an airport.

Future President Santorum said something along the line of, "No one would be stupid enough to do that!".

    Want to bet, Ricky?
