    Re: Best Donuts in Iowa?

Growing up we used to go to Highland Bakery all the time when visiting my great grandma. I have a lot of memories between getting donuts and frosted cookies there or my grandma taking me to Little John's.

Now, I would say Dahl's when I am living down in Johnston for the summer or Dunkin up at school. Although, if I am going out to get breakfast it is usually going to be bagels. Bruegger's has it then.

Edit: Homemade donuts are a good idea for morning tailgates btw. We've those a few times with good success.

I don't eat a lot of donuts, but Hy-Vee Bakery has good glazed donuts.

I'm trying to think if I've ever had a bad fresh donut. I don't think I have, they're pretty hard to screw up.

Your opinion means nothing. There are few things in this world finer than some cake doughnuts with milk (preferably chocolate).

This. These are one of only a few things that made life in Iowa City tolerable.

Donuts are like a weekday on the Golf course......not a bad one.

Nothing a microwave and a little milk can't fix.

Piece of advice, have friends in the cattle barn with a cooler, purchase one beer from Stockmans, refill cup from cattle barn all night. Your welcome.
I have no doubt it's a different experience if you actually have a reason to be there. But the general population that is paying an entrance fee just to be hot, crowded, pay obscene food prices, quick walk by some livestock, and get sold a bunch of crap in the industries building? I guess I just don't get it.

Dough and Joe in Cresco. I don't even really like pastries, but if I'm in Cresco in the morning, I'm probably stopping in for a maple glazed long john.

IIRC, the bakery in Elkader is run by the same people, or there's some kind of formal connection. I've yet to stop in there, but I've heard nothing but universal praise.

Yes it is. Try going to the Ohio STate fair and drink a beer.

Don't you frequent the small town bakery where you live? If not, you are missing out. Especially early in the morning when they are really fresh.
