My 2nd cousin ended up taking over our family farm when nobody in our family chose to stay. I took my daughter out there a couple weeks ago when we went back home. I almost wished I hadn't. It doesn't look like anything has seen a coat of paint since I was there some 20+ years ago. And when I think of the countless hours I spent on a loader painting those machine sheds.....

I had the opposite experience with the family ranch I loved so much as a kid...spent my summers there. Too small to support 3 families, and none of the three sons could buy the other two out (my father is the middle son). So, when Grandpa couldn't work it anymore, he finally sold the whole thing, except for 100 acres, to the heirs of a Houston oil man. They didn't want a working ranch, they wanted a weekend retreat. The peaceful, uncluttered ranch I loved has tennis courts, a swimming pool, a huge bluegrass lawn (not common in the hill country), and a private airstrip. Definitely not the place I remember.

Did they retaliate by putting air bags in your sofas and office chairs?
