ISU needs the Des Moines market...and we don't need to split people's attention spans and more importantly, their sport's spending $$$.

Fortunately, top tier pro sports teams don't locate in the markets the size of DM. There simply isn't the corporate sponsorship available. It doesn't matter if we can fill the seats in the arena. The big bucks needed to support such a team don't come from average fans....they come from corporations.
I don't the think an NBA team would affect ISU in a bad way. The OSU fan thing and the NBA is an excuse for their poor attendance.

Was the Energy a secondary D team before. Did all 5 of the teams have another D league team as well?

Meh. Nobody I know attends these games. I've heard it's not uncommon for there to be <1000 routinely in attendance.

That is the problem when you don't know anyone that attends games and then you throw out a statistics based on what you heard.

The team is profitable. That is not happening if attendance is a bad as you "heard". Some weekends attendance is reported at 5K - 7K. That is not bad for NBA D League standards. In 2011 when the Energy won the championship, they had 14,000+ in attendance.

BTW....I see there is a story on the NBA-D League official site: http://www.nba.com/dleague/news/memp...014_05_06.html

I am just a little skeptical of the attendance numbers.

It could. I am not sure whether the Iowans have enough disposable income to go to NBA games and ISU games. NBA in Iowa might hurt ISU not only from the basketball attendance standpoint but also from other sides: how much money that could be given to ISU (alumni donations, Athletic Departments, buy tickets for other sports' games) are gone because the money will be spent on attending NBA game(s).

...and you have corporations now having an additional team to considering spending their sponsorship dollars.

It is easy now when things are flying high to say no one would turn their attention away from ISU for another team. But in leaner times if there is a winner down I-35 in the high profile NBA (the league's profile would JUMP in central Iowa if we had a team), watch out.

Does Big County Bryant Reeves have some kind of unfinished business here in Central Iowa?

You're missing out. If this was still the post Jordan era filled with me first stars and isolation dominated offense, I'd agree with you. But the league is loaded with likable superstars right now and the good teams can play some D.

That is really, really bad. I pretty much cringe at their commercials or advertising. I don't think DSM would be all that worse off if we lost our D-League team.

IMO Iowa Wild games > Iowa Energy games. Even despite the fact that the Energy are towards the top and Wild are near the bottom of their respective leagues as far as winning record is concerned.

I enjoy Wild and I-Cubs games so I'd be sad if either of them left.

Seriously? I will never understand why so many people never give the NBA a chance. They always come up with these reasons why they can't stand it and yet they never watch a single game. If they did they would realize how much different it is from the slouch to start the millennium. The NBA is the best professional sports league out there right now.
