Monday Musings: Four-year anniversary (share your story)

Four years ago today, Fred Hoiberg was hired as Iowa State's basketball coach. I remember that day vividly. Here is my story. I'm hoping that after reading it, you all will tell yours.

My first thought was AWESOME! My 2nd thought was, "How would you ever fire Fred Hoiberg."

This is exactly what I thought as well. When CFH was hired I thought, "If he fails, you still can't fire him." Now I want to keep him by all means necessary.

Also, his first contract was five years at $800,000 per year. Now? Nine more years at $2,600,000 (average) per year.

Pretty much my exact same sentiments. I remember when the search was going on, someone hinted at something like CFH and it was a "that's too good to happen" and I tempered my expectations between an "up and comer" type of coach or a boring, yet proven coach and was weighing pros/cons of each...and usually fell to the "well crap, a lot of times these things dont work out and in 3-4 years, we'd be doing this again."

When my bro in law called me to break the news, I was VERY excited...honestly, not a hint of doubt about the lack of coaching as I had heard enough stories of his character and his intelligence to know he wouldn't pursue this if he didn't think it'd work. It actually kinda reminded me of the feeling (different, but similar) to when I heard Snyder was rehired at KSU after the Prince fall out....kinda a "don't worry guys, I got this" to the fans.

If this is true, he'll win. He knows the Magic here. He can tell recruits stories that will make them think Ames is a serious place.
He knows the fans, so he can sell tickets like crazy. Think that our sleeping giant wouldn't go completely nuts to see the Mayor lead us back to the tournament?

It didn't take long for most fans to get on board (hell it might have been by the end of that thread), but initially there were a lot of angry people. Some of the doubt was understandable. Some was over the top.

4 years later and I think 90% of us would agree that he is a bargain at $2.6 million per year.

Re: Monday Musings: Four-year anniversary (share your story)

When McD was hired I lamented in my belief that he wasn't Big 12 ready and we'd have to fire a native son.

I thought Hoiberg was a home run, but not to the extent he's turned into. He's going to make ISU "Duke-like"...

And just to be clear about my prognostication skills, I really thought Chizik was the real deal...

I think you trust your first gut instincts. I was totally against Gmac getting hired, after the speculation leading up to the announcement. I warmed up to him after his press conference here. My initial gut feeling was correct however (nice guy though)

I didn't have that trepidation when Fred was hired. Was willing to give him 3-4 years to right the ship, so Fred has been a fantastic hire in retrospect

Is there anywhere I can listen to this Walters-Perrault debate at? Sounds legendary.

I was really excited by his hire.
But then again, I was excited by the hire of Chizik.
    What do I know?

I'm not gonna lie, I didn't follow ISU much in High School mainly because I hadn't fully decided where I was going to go at that point of his hiring. But my initial thoughts were, well at least they have an attractive coach.
