I agree, they should close off Welch from Lincoln to at least Chamberlain starting at like 9:00pm on Thu/Fri/Sat.

Was thinking more of "college town" in the sense of a small town that revolves around the campus, so not really Columbus. If you have been to Lawrence or Manhattan for example, both of their entertainment district areas blow Ames' away and it is not even close.

I wish we had a Campustown similar to Aggieville in Manhattan. Had a blast when we were down there this past fall

2nd or 3rd floor. One of those floors will be rented out for offices as well. Could be a really nice economic improvement for everyone but the imaginary coffee shops.

This is a major improvement for Campustown. If you have been to literally any other major college town anywhere, their bar district is significantly better than ours. I bet even BYU has a better bar district.
Yeah, but what about the bars.....the ones the young football players hang out in....

1 block east will have 2 new 6 story buildings with retail on first floor and student housing above. Campustown is going to be incredibly better in the next few years. Obviously a few developers see untapped potential or they wouldnt invest millions in it. Makes matty goodman look like small fries.

This part i would somewhat agree with.

Campustown needs massive redevelopment, my main problem with some proposals in the past is that they were given goals by ames officials to be more 'everyone' oriented. If they razed the entire block on the west side of welch and lincoln way and redeveloped it with an entertainment focus (bars and restaurants, maybe a theater or some other entertainment option), i think everyone would be better off.

So we can have riots every nice weekend? There's a reason they haven't turned that block into a pedestrian mall. It's to minimize congregations.

And for the folks complaining that the bars in Campustown suck, start your own. Most of those establishments were started by people who thought the same thing.

Re: Just drove by campus town

For those interested here are some renderings of the projects currently underway. Overall, the projects will add more retail than is currently there and increase the density in campustown as well as improve the asthetics.

Site of old campus book store

Site of First National bank building

    Kingland Systems

Site next to Outlaws on Chamberlain

There's a pretty good boom going on in campustown right now. There's the new dorm tower getting built on Lincoln Way too and a project coming soon by Kum and Go, along with other possible projects.

Manhattan's bar district is cleaner, but that's about the main difference.

Campustown looks like ****, but the bars are as good of a time as any other college town I've been to. Renovations are needed immediately, but this idea that it's just miles behind other places in terms of a good time confuses me.

I must be the only one who thought Aggieville was way too tame. It was a lot nicer than Campustown, but it wasn't any more fun, if that makes sense. It almost seemed too sterile at times.

That said, if Campustown could look like Aggieville and maintain the current/always attitude, we'd be really onto something.

How anyone can think this is a bad thing for Campustown is beyond me.
