Well, yeah, that's the whole point of this thread. "Real" Americans don't win marathons anymore.

You realize the last time any American not born in Africa won a major City (Boston, LA, Chicago, New York) Marathon was 1994. And the last time an American born person won a medal in the marathon in the Olympics was 1924.

But that makes perfect sense since Americans are notorious for not doing well in the summer Olympics and don't have very many quality athletes.

Not arguing those facts at all. The only problem I have is people judging that other american citizens aren't 'fully' American because they weren't born here, or their name is different than the European names that 'real' Americans have, or they don't speak with a 'real' american accent.

<edit: And just to be clear, I'm not saying this as an overly sensitive minority...I'm so white I go from pale to lobster in the sun, I have a name of German ancestry, and I talk like I'm from Eastern Iowa...my friends from far northern Iowa say I talk like I'm from Missouri, my friends from southern Iowa say I talk like I'm from Minnesota, and everyone else outside of Iowa says I talk like I'm from Iowa...I just believe that people coming here who believe in the american dream and are willing to do the work to become citizens shouldn't be treated any differently than those who won the birthplace lottery>

oh well in that case we're on the same page. I'm trying to give Ken Miller the benefit of doubt that he just didn't word it very well.

Not that it matters, Canadians don't get to decide who is and who isn't American

I actually wondered if we imported this guy when I heard an American won. Turns out he was originally from another country. I think what Miller and everyone else was saying is it was not your typical American Runner. I was an runner who was from Africa and came over when he was young.

That is what I believe Miller was trying to say, but poorly worded his explanation.
Hard to argue with some of this. Absolutely no doubt that the guy is an American and should be treated as such in the books, but he's also not your stereotypical American and has natural elite running abilities from his foreign bloodline. No way you put an asterisk next to his name though, he earned this!

That Jeremy Wariner was pretty awful at the 400m dash, don't even start me on Michael Johnson, and GAWD did Carl Lewis suck at everything but singing!

ďUrgency,Ē Rhoads said. ďThatís exactly what I told our staff. Itís exactly what I told our players. Urgency in getting your job done. Thatís in a 100 percent rate of speed at executing your responsibility ó whether itís a fit, whether itís a tackle, whether itís a route, whether itís a cut-off block. Everybody needs a little bit more urgency in coaching and playing.Ē

Wonder what Miller thinks of Ejim's level of Canadian-ness?

He has lived here in San Diego since coming to the US as a child. He went to high school here, went to UCLA, and became a citizen. He's in the media here quite often and when he speaks you can hear the pride he has for this country. As American as anybody.

Also, not sure what "rednecks" have to do with this. Bringing that into the conversation was about as dumb as anybody claiming Meb isn't really an American.

    slight exaggeration

I'd have no problem if Eritrean newspapers/media had big stories about one of their own winning the marathon and in fact assume that they did do so.
You're missing my point. The analogy is that Ken Miller is basically telling Hawk fans, "No, you can't claim Gable." He was born ("conceived of and birthed by Harold Nichols and ISU wrestling") a Cyclone. "You want to claim him but you really can't."

It's not just poor choice of words. It's fundamentally wrong.
