Linux Users - What Version Do You Use?

I am fascinated by Linux and I have only been playing around with it for two or three weeks. I am amazed at the quality of OS it provides. I know there are hundreds of versions out there. I have only messed around with a few versions. It is interesting in that I find myself liking certain versions but not others...for example I like Linux Mint 201403 (Debian) for some reason but I can't really say why? It just seems easy to use and recognize. Also, I like Kubuntu a lot but wasn't a big fan of Ubuntu when I played around with it.

As pointed out, I have only played around with this for a couple of weeks. I have a lot to learn about Linux.

For those that use Linux, what version do you use and if you wouldn't mind, what do you like about it?

    Thanks!

Re: Linux Users - What Version Do You Use?

    I run openSUSE with KDE.

    Pros:
    - Default installation has a lot of functionality, so the computer is up and running and you can do what you want to do in a short period of time.
    - I enjoy the visual effects of KDE 4, but that's largely preference. I don't like the appearance of GNOME.
    - Easy to install additional software (just need the *.rpm if it's not found within the repositories).
    - It "stays out of my way" (like most linux distributions). I like to get my computer configured "just so", and it really grinds my gears when Windows tries to be helpful and undo my modifications.

    Cons:
    - Cost of being full-featured is that the installation size continues to grow. It's still less intensive than Win7/8, but I've noticed the effect of "feature creep" over the past few years (I've run SUSE/openSUSE since 2006). Even as the installation size grows, though, it's still much more responsive than Win7 on older hardware.
    - Also due to the large number of available features, it can be confusing during the initial install to determine what packages should be installed. It doesn't phase me anymore, but I could see a noob being intimidated by the package selection step during the installation process. The selection defaults are a pretty good start, though.

I like Mint, its lightweight. Used to like Ubuntu, but Unity blows.

Re: Linux Users - What Version Do You Use?

The versions I have played around with are very easy to work with for simple tasks which I think is great. I am just getting into them so I am hoping I don't do anything catastrophic as I experiment with them. I don't have anything important on the computer I am using so I just resort to reinstalling an OS if I do something I can't undo. Which is one very nice thing about Linux...used to take me half a day to reinstall Windows...

So I've always heard about Linux and I've always been curious as well. What exactly is it and why is it preferred over windows?

Re: Linux Users - What Version Do You Use?

Also...Kubuntu...Ubuntu...I am not knowledgeable enough about computers to judge much beyond visual preferences and ease of use for me as well as things like speed of boot process and such. I guess at this point Kubuntu must have struck me as being easier for me to use than Ubuntu even though I keep reading it should be the other way around.

I have no idea why I prefer Mint (Debian) over the other versions of Mint other than the Debian-based Mint found my printer/scanner drivers immediately and the resolution on my screen seems perfect right out of the installation.

I was thinking that same thing a month ago. Now I might be hooked on Linux. I can't give you any technical details because I am not very techie at all. You can run Ubuntu, Mint and most other Linux OS from a USB drive. Give it a shot! You can experiment with as many versions as you care to download (only takes a few minutes for each one if you have a good internet connection). If you don't like what you see then you just restart your computer and pull the USB drive out. If you like what you see then you can install it on the same drive as your Windows. Here is a great free tool to make bootable USB drives:

That might be...and I guess I was including getting the computer set up as I wanted it. And I haven't done a full-reinstallation of Windows since I used XP. But trust me, I guarantee I wasn't doing it like an expert would...I am far from one in this field!

I usually bounce back and forth between Ubuntu and mint. I'm giving steamos a trial on one of my boxes. I like lubuntu as a lightweight os.
