Question about 2000 Mich St Game...

I know, I know.. this is a sore subject. Nevermind the blarge. The question I have comes at the 4 minute mark in the second half. Fizer is called for a foul for a moving screen, and rightfully so as he extends his leg/hip and clips the defender. However, mich st shoots a 1 and 1 for the foul and makes both. Am I missing something? How can the other team shoot free throws on an offensive foul?

Sorry if this has been discussed. The only thing I ever hear about that game is the blarge. Hopefully I'm not just having a brain fart but this has me confused!

Re: Question about 2000 Mich St Game...

Prior to 2002-03 season, offensive fouls would result in free throws if the team is in the bonus, and the foul is committed by a player without the ball.

    Source: Wikipedia

No free throws were awarded to the offended team in bonus for personal fouls committed by a team while in team control or in possession of the ball during a throw-in (team-control foul).

    And that's frickin dumb!

“That’s how good they are,” said Moton, whose MEAC champion Eagles (28-5) are on a 20-game win streak. “I couldn’t sleep (Monday) night. I woke up in the middle of the night thinking about DeAndre Kane — and that’s reality. … They just present so many different matchup nightmares across the board.”

There was so much crap in the officiating of that game... To this day you will never hear the truth from the officials or any Michigan St. player. Did you know Paul Shirley averaged about 1 or 2 fouls a game that season? but in this particular game he fouls out with the most unconscious officiating I have seen to date. What's more, Shirley didn't even play until the 2nd half.

How many fouls have you seen called like that one on Fizer? I bet I saw at least a dozen instances of the same thing in every game in the NCAA's and it was NEVER called. And Michigan State did the same thing. It was another BS call to give the game to Michigan State. The foul on Fizer was a ticky tack BS call.

    http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2...state-tom-izzo

Then Fizer was shackled with a ridiculous fourth foul for setting what appeared to be a solid pick 45 feet from the basket. This game surely convinced Fizer, a junior, he has had enough of the NCAA's schoolmarm refs and collapsing zones.
Finally Iowa State's Paul Shirley bumped into MSU's Charlie Bell as Shirley scored in the lane with two minutes left. It should have been a let-'em-play no-call, giving the Cyclones a three-point lead. Disagreeing refs finally gave each player a foul. Huh?

Officiating aside, we had several uncharacteristic bad turnovers in that game, didn't actually play very well at all offensively.

The best thing about that game is we're finally getting in position to be able to forget it by getting back in the Final Four/National Championship conversation. It was the fact that anyone with a brain knew it was the two best teams in the nation, and easily the two best teams left in the tournament.

Are you new here? Dont you know when we lose it is never ever ever poor play or bad decisions as to why we lost....its ALWAYS 100% officiating "screwed us".

    But........when we win...its 100% the players.

    :)

I kid. There were some odd calls.....but you cant let Mo Pete go back door lob at the end of that game. They only ran that play 1000 times that year.

I'm just glad we have a program where hopefully we'll have another Elite 8 chance again soon.

We used to talk about if we could even make the NIT, now we're talking about how high we'll be ranked come next winter.

I'm sure if we were playing on a cardinal and gold court in Des Moines, and our coach got a T with 5 minutes left that lead to a 8 vs 5 game the rest of the night, Michigan State would have crumbled just as bad or worse. Despite turning it over a lot, ISU was clearly the better team until the home team fix came in.

It's almost like you get some sort of sick pleasure mocking our inability to win that game. Of course you don't want to give up that play, if only we'd had another big guy to protect the rim....oh wait, he had "fouled out" already. The officiating in that game was a complete crock of **** and an absolute joke to the profession. I will readily admit when our teams should have been able to overcome officiating in other games, but when you're playing for the national title against the media darling on their "home court", the margin for error is razor thing and any outside force is magnified ten-fold.

Isn't it simply just not a "player control foul"? You only don't shoot FT on player control - ie - you have the ball. Push off, wrap around, charge,

Illegal screens and such where you don't have the ball are still assessed FTs.

    Right?

    This was the turning point.

While on live TV, Ford used a vulgar term to describe a private part of the female anatomy, adding that he was “happily married” and “got more than enough to eat at home.”
