    Mac defends Barney/offense

Came across this article and find it interesting that Mac and the offense are of the defensive. I can't see how they can argue that they're not playing conservatively on offense.

    Re: Mac defends Barney/offense

One thing you notice when you look at the formations we ran in the second half last week was Blythe in slot formation......Iowa's adjustment to this in the second half was to chip him with a lb and cover him deep with a safety. This opened up Stevie and Brett running the ball, so I don't blame Barney for calling run plays up the middle when Iowa has 7 guys in the box......however, when that extra safety gets sucked in the box, our other receivers need to catch the ball when they are open on 3rd and 5.

I would also like to see him stretch the defense with Davis if they are going to double cover Blythe this year.

Texas gives up a yard a rush so far. If Stevie averages 2 yards per carry, he will be twice as good as the previous Texas opponents including Rice.

    Re: Mac defends Barney/offense

I would just like to see the offense execute, whatever the play call is. We should have had our way with Toledo and UNLV, and we didn't. I'm not putting the problems all on the players, but they have to execute, they are vets, and everybody, from fans to coaches to I'm sure themselves, expected more of them at this point in the season.

We all thought Blythe could be an All-American, and that Meyer was the best QB in the Big 12. They haven't looked like either so far.

Blythe in the slot also opens it up for the 8 yard out and the out and go; never saw that tho.

    Re: Mac defends Barney/offense

I like your thinking......double covering Blythe has to create man to man matchups, and those outside receivers have to win some of those battles. A team very similar to us which created matchup problems with a great wide receiver and had a big offensive line, very good 2nd and 3rd wide receivers and average backs was the Vikings recently when they created headaches for coordinators by mainly using Moss as a decoy. Every so often he'd get a deep ball, and if it was man to man, he'd win the battle. Sound familiar??

Nothing strikes fear in an opposing coordinator like the deep ball.......I have little recollection of us throwing it deep this year.....lets hope for the sake of our football season that changes.
