Hed (PE) really went downhill after Broke. They really lost it moving to KMK's Suburban Noize label. I saw them numerous times back in the day and they always tore it up. Is the Supertoad even around anymore? Or Toad Holler (sp?)?

First Ave is just such a great venue, and they're all people who really care about music there. Probably, I don't know, 12 years or so ago, I had tickets to go see Violent Femmes up there. I took off work and drove up, and got there early. I went in because there was no line outside, and they explained that Gordon Gano had decided to cancel the show last-minute, and that Ticketmaster had been supposed to call and tell everyone (and maybe refund them). Since I'd driven so far, they gave me tickets to the ballroom's show that night, as well as to all of the other shows that week (which we unfortunately couldn't attend, since we were driving back after the show that night). Great customer service.

I know the Beastie Boys have gotten a lot of praise but every time I hear them I just can't help but think about how underrated they are in the present day. Young-ins, look them up and appreciate it.

I'm 100% with you. I will listen to the Beasties pretty much any time, night or day. "Paul's Boutique" was a masterpiece.

They're playing two headlining nights at Red Rocks. I'd agree they're properly rated, if not slightly overrated based on that.

I argue the same thing about two other bands from the '90s that are often regarded as one-hit wonders, but if you listen deeper in their catalogues, they're probably two of my favorite bands from that era.

Blind Melon - gritty and bluesy, and you can actually hear their influence in a lot of today's stuff
The Verve - trippy as hell, A Storm in Heaven is one of my favorite albums

Yes to both of these. We talk a lot about Blind Melon in our house in the exact same context. And The Verve would be huge if they hadn't had the Stones issue with Bittersweet Symphony.

I haven't been to First Ave in a long, long time, so I don't know what it's been like recently. But I saw so many memorable shows there, "back in the day."

Re: Most under rated band of all time

Apparently "all time" goes back about 50 years. Let me throw some out. Gustav Mahler, hugely popular now but virtually unknown as a composer during his lifetime. The same thing applies to J. S. Bach, went unknown for nearly a hundred years after his death.
During my ISU days there was a bar called Jolly's that had two bands that alternated weekends: Terra Firma, who were ok, and The Pelican Peace Band who were great, they have been inducted into the Iowa Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Oh, here's one I think is underrated or at least unfairly critically ignored:

    Collective Soul.

Remove "Shine" and "The World I Know" for overplay, and there's a ton of great "singles rock" in that discography.

CS fell into a formula almost immediately, but man, it's an effective mix of melody and riffs.

Silverchair. Yes the first albums are bad, but once Daniel kind of figures himself out, the last two are great. Young Modern is (and probably always will be) one of my favorite albums.

As for bands that got radio time, its Stone Temple Pilots for me.

There is a lot of good bands that never made it half way big for some reason. One good thing about Pandora is getting introduced to some of that music.
