Re: Most under rated band of all time

Lots of good mentions so far. Marcy Playground certainly isn't the most underrated band of all time but they haven't been mentioned yet. Their only big single, Sex and Candy was over played and not a great representation of their style. They have five albums now and they are all pretty solid from start to finish.

I don't know how underrated they are, but I'd have to say Pantera. Dimebag was an absolute genius on the guitar. Phil, when on, was pretty great live.

Re: Most under rated band of all time

Zombies is the first thought I had and happy to see they got several mentions. Truly musically gifted and more complex than many of their contemporaries. Now well appreciated. Buy their box "Zombie Heaven" for the whole kit and kaboodle.

I too saw the Dave Clark 5 special on PBS and it was excellent. You rarely get to see much of them probably BECAUSE Dave owns the rights and keeps a tight rein on the product. It was waaaay too long before he even let them out on CD way back when. Fortunately I had a Primo EMI Starline stereo vinyl hits collection and converted that - along with some singles that charted in the US - into MP3.

Two other bands not well appreciated in the US are the Easybeats, best know for their song "Friday On My Mind" also were repeatedly top of the charts in Oz. Check out some of their videos ("Sorry" is a good example). And the Pretty Things - a UK 60's band that had more attitude than the Stones and some great rock tracks. Check out Midnight to Six Man or Rosalyn on YouTube.

Well appreciated but still under appreciated - The Kinks and Chuck Berry. I'm just afraid most under 40 really don't appreciate the quantity and quality of Chuck Berry's contributions. Awesome guitar pioneer, of course, but his lyrics and story-song writing abilities are vastly under appreciated. The Kinks - just listen to Days or Waterloo Sunset on one hand and then All Day and All of the Night or I'm Not Like Everybody Else for a spectrum.

Also from the late 70s and 80's Nick Lowe. Rockpile with Dave Edmunds, produced the Early Elvis Costello LPs, and I think the first BoDean's LP. But his own stuff is just simple but phenomenal Pop/rock

Yeah I can't get past that ******* song. They were at Dot Fest back in the day and they played Sex and Candy a couple times because no one cared about the rest of their songs.

Love is a great group too. Forgot they were mentioned. I like their first LP better than Forever Changes, but that's for sure just me. First album has more of a Byrds sound to it and has their only hit - Bacharach/David's "My Little Red Book".

Which always reminds me of another California group, northern CA. Beau Brummels made some fine pop music. I prefer the early Autumn Label stuff, but critics are more fond of the WB LP "Bradley's Barn". The early Autumn label stuff was produced by Sly Stone (Sylvester Stewart).

I went in because there was no line outside, and they explained that Gordon Gano had decided to cancel the show last-minute, and that Ticketmaster had been supposed to call and tell everyone (and maybe refund them). Since I'd driven so far, they gave me tickets to the ballroom's show that night, as well as to all of the other shows that week (which we unfortunately couldn't attend, since we were driving back after the show that night). Great customer service.
Absolutely amazing place to see a band. I grew up 2 hours east of there (Eau Claire, WI area) and it is an amazing venue. Favorite shows there are Built to Spill and Mogwai. Listening to Mogwai play "New Paths to Helicon Pt 1" is a top moment in seeing them. You're not just listening to the music, you are breathing it.

I'm going to add The Long Ryders.

It's more "obscure" than "underrated," though.

Last show I saw there was Rilo Kiley. It was sold out, and we got there wicked-early and got a seat on the balcony (I'm too short to get much from watching shows on the floor), but it's such a great venue that every place in the room felt like it was right next to the stage.

Ok, it's been a long time since I was in the Midwest music scene, but my old band got to play First Ave and Quest Club and they were both great venues. Actually, I went to a show at First Ave back in 2001 to see my friends band Hatred play an after party for Coal Chamber and Drowning Pool. There was a badass Iowa band playing as well called Absent (used to be called Krete).

Pantera was amazing, but not under rated at all. BUT, check out a band called Exhorder. One of the most under rated bands of all time. Pantera was a glam band until they heard Exhorder. The Cowboys From Hell album sounds exactly like Exhorder. There's this whole debate about wether or not Pantera "stole" their sound from Exhorder. I love both bands, but probably like Exhorder just a little bit more.
