Re: Irving Pic Holding Stop Sign At Riot

Who cares if people were there? Not everyone there did the stupid **** that ruined it. I know if I was in the area I would have been around and watched.

Also I'm pretty sure the majority of people have touched or leaned against a pole, counter, or wall when you're just standing around talking doing whatever. I'm pretty confident if he was actually ripping it down there would have been more than this one picture of him just touching it.

Hooking up with the wrong girl (guy) is something that happens...probably nightly in a college town. While I agree that it would have been better all around if he had kept his pants zipped, that ship sailed long ago, and evidence (fabricated and/or non-existent) led judges and prosecutors to believe that it was nothing more than what likely half of the student population of ISU has done at some point. I don't believe that they should be pilloried for it any more than I think Bubu should have been.
There is a level of difference between one night stands and drunken vandalism, but nonetheless, in both cases I am arguing for consistency in the interpretation of the student conduct code and application of punishment.

In this case, President Leath has already set the tone for punishment by unilaterally cancelling all events for this weekend, regardless of the fact that NONE of those events promote what occured last night. If he is going to essentially punish those who planned & would have executed all of the VEISHEA events by wiping out their months of work, then he should unilaterally punish those students involved in the off campus mob action that precipitated the cancellation. Those who cheered on the vandals were no less guilty than the ones who actually damaged property.

There is certainly plenty of video evidence to track down who was there, and who was actively participating either physically or vocally.

And I would be less adamant about this if the initial reaction had not been so knee-jerk.

All this proves is that cameras everywhere only makes things worse. Look at all the McCarthyism over these photos.

Re: Irving Pic Holding Stop Sign At Riot

Not sure how you base a suspension just on that picture of Irving holding the Stop Sign. We do not have the context of what happened in the whole situation.

As far as the canceling of VEISHEA, better off to cancel it. Students flipping over cars and the like is just pure idiocy. End the event if they don't know how to party properly. They are freaking idiots. And it is on a weeknight before the big celebration takes place. This is like how many times in the last decade or so.

What is so neat about flipping over cars? And burning stuff? What I suggest for those involved is about 1,000 hours of unpaid community service of picking up cans, and garbage, or cleaning up public transportation vehicles every Saturday and Sunday afternoon until the hours are served. And no excuses for missing even one weekend. Miss a weekend results in penalties of more hours in addition to the ones missed. Time for public service and work instead of jail for those involved. A year or more of working EVERY WEEKEND with no exceptions should make a person think twice about being an idiot.

The KCCI video clearly shows Irving raising the broken stop sign.

Let's hope the rumors that witnesses saw him help bust it down are false.

And yeah, I get that these things happen, and when drunk college kids start acting up, look out. That doesn't make it okay. Just look at the raw videos. Without a strong police presence that came in, more people likely would've been hurt, a lot more damage would've been done, and/or someone likely would've been killed. Those light poles are heavy...and when they fall, as violently as they were being shaken, whatever (unfortunately in this case, whomever) is in their path is in trouble.

And to play devil's advocate, what happens later that night if someone's driving near the intersection David took the stop sign (allegedly) from? They're unfamiliar with the area, keep driving along, and BAM! They get t-boned by another vehicle. Just a dumb move by David. I don't mind him being there at all, but he's a football player who's already been in trouble before. He shouldn't have been carrying that stop sign.

Watch out. With all the Leath student policy suspensions coming up, EIU may have the bigger student population now.

Re: Irving Pic Holding Stop Sign At Riot

Well, what if David was trying to HELP the Police and Medical personnel, as the earlier poster said who was there, by helping move the street light? Maybe he looked down in the street and saw the Stop sign laying there and decided to move it out of the way so the ambulance could get through? We never know, so don't be too harsh to criticize before knowing all the facts.

Now, in my mind, should he have walked away when the riots started? Yes. But then again, maybe he lives close to Welch, heard the riots and went down out of curiosity? We just don't know. At this point, we can all question his judgement just for being there, but maybe he thought he was taking a leadership role by helping move the light that fell and trying to help the injured student once he saw people needed help? Let all the facts come out first, then let CPR decide what to do. I have faith he will do the right thing with his players.

And the riots need to stop. I was a bystander in 1988 when the first riot occurred off Welch down by the Towers. I was amazed then, but to keep doing this over and over is an embarrassment to ISU.

He appears to resolve things by just cancelling issues like VEISHA and Bubu. I would be surprised if VEISHA came back next year. Easier to hide under a rock.
