Puts me smack-dab in the middle on this issue I guess.

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

I agree with this point, but think it's more indicative that military grade arms and ordinance shouldn't be in the hands of anyone, police force included.

Just to be clear that article didn't mention the word "riot" once. They said it was for shootout/gunman type situations.

The Homeland Security (i. e. Overloads) recently bought a billion bullets and thousands of armadillo buster vehicles just for occasions like VEISHA to try them out for training purposes.

True, but I have no problem with paying for it for the military to use. In fact, what I recall seeing on the news during the height of the Iraq war - with our soldiers getting IED'd constantly - I'm ticked we didn't pay for more of them.

I suppose that leads to an interesting question. Why is this no longer serviceable for the military, yet functional enough it can be given away to a police force with a population of about 100K in Iowa?

Also, I believe there's one in Washington too. Not D.C., Washington, Iowa.

The war on drugs has created the problem we're trying to solve here.

I agree for their original use (leaving aside whether we should have been there in the first place), and I get that otherwise these things would go in a bone yard somewhere to rust, but if that is the only alternative destination, then let it rust.

    Re: New Riot Buster?

It amazes me that people get so upset over police departments acquiring these. The military isn't going to use them anymore and the departments are getting them for free. To buy a similar armored vehicle the cost is around $200,000. These aren't used for patrol, traffic enforcement or any other minor task (minus public events to show them off to kids). They only come out when they are needed. A common use for armored vehicles is to safely get to people that are in harms way and remove them to a safe area. If it is ever your family and you have some nut job neighbor that wants to barricade himself in his house and pop off rounds you will be very happy when that armored vehicle rolls up, loads up your family and gets you to safety.
