Putting up cameras in campus town is thinking small picture. That's the first thing that is going to get destroyed by the people rioting. Throw up a couple of drones and equip them with cameras and tear gas. Email Obama. He owes us, Iowa is the only reason he's president right now.

The answer is simple, if you're going to do this crap, do it in Iowa City

If you're taking an active role in being violent or disturbing others than of course you're involved...if you're standing on the outside of "the mob" watching and doing nothing wrong, I see no problem with that...so sue me.

No doubt, but with the rate you are bashing greek students, the same exact thing can be said about non-greeks. They just aren't affiliated with a group so it is hard to stereotype them.

I just don't understand why you keep pointing out a couple houses and saying they were a big part of it, then retreating and saying greek houses are a good thing. College is a good thing too (well that can be argued), but there are bad apples in any "group" you put people into. So I would suggest you stop attacking the greek houses and realize this was a campus-wide or apparently non-ISU student problem.

Not that this is really important in light of other things, but I'm sure the football and basketball recruits and their families will be really impressed if there is more rioting this weekend during their visits, or if the VEISHEA activities get cancelled. Moron students.

This. The whole "they'll riot anyway" line of logic is completely faulty. The "Dry" VEISHEA back in the late 90's, after that guy got killed, was a super unpopular decision. No riots, though. 2005, like you said, was tame.

That said, if Leath cancels the events planned for this weekend, then there might be some folks who still want to go nuts, but I'm guessing the police will be out in force, and put to bed anything before it gets out of hand.

Yep. "They weren't ISU students" is a long standing excuse of the troubles at VEISHEA. But they are locals, or friends of locals, or guests of ISU students, or Alums, or just random morons. Doesn't matter.

They're all there due to an ISU sanctioned event. And unfortunately that means ISU is ultimately responsible for the future of the event.

The only thing I can see that may stop this is to literally shut down the campus town bars during the week - completely, or at least very early. And what business is going to stand for that?

It really is funny how people just assume that it was the greeks based off the stereotypes. do we party? Damn right we do.
But do we also raise millions of dollars for philanthropy? Yes. that goes really un noticed.

Re: *** OFFICIAL VEISHEA WEEK 2014 THREAD ***

What can the administration really do to end "week long drunk week" in the short term? Cancel the academic/cultural side? It doesn't make sense to me to cancel Veishea for your School when it is clearly one of your biggest traditions. Put more effort into patrolling high volume areas like Welch Ave and increase penalties if you have too, but cancelling may only bring more issues.
