    Greatest Day of The Year

Yesterday was one of my favorite days of the year. One I celebrate more than Christmas or New Years. I just did a little research on the daylight thing. Yesterday we recieved 3 hours 57 minutes of sunlight, and beginning today, will gain light back at an average of 6 minutes per day. That means that by Febuary 10th we will have doubled our sunlight. By contrast, my hometown of Spencer, Iowa had 9 hours 4 minutes yesterday (lets call it 9 hours). Nome won't reach that amount until February 19th. It will take Spencer two weeks to gain the amount of light what we gain today. Of course, on March 21st (the Vernal Equinox), Spencer and Nome will have the same amount of daylight, roughly 12 hours. That means that during the previous three months we will have tripled (300% gain) our daylight, while Spencer will have only gained three hours (30% gain). In other words, we will have had 10 times the percent gain in that three months. Add another three months, and you get to the Summer Solstice (the ultimate Yin/Yang, Land of the Midnight Sun but "it's all downhill from here" day of the year). Where as Spencer will have gained another 3 hours, bringing it up to 15 and a half, Nome will be at nearly 22 hours. The other factor, however, is twilight. Since the angle the sun sets is so slight, there is usable sunlight all "night" for us on the Summer Solstice. The amount of day and twilight in Spencer is 16 hours minutes. Thanks for helping me celebrate the greatest day of the year in Nome, AK

-- Yesterday the temp was -23. No Problem. I took one of my dogs, Heffer, out for an 8-mile skijor with windchill at
    -40.

Wishing you Peace in the New Year,

I can't imagine what it would be like to live in that environment!

    Happy light gaining season!

I'm traveling to Las Vegas and won't return until January 3rd. So even if it is only neon, I'll be seing a lot more light shortly.

Re: Greatest Day of The Year

That's cool stuff. Once the days start getting really short, usually after the return to standard time I look forward to the winter solstice and the process of the days getting longer again.

    Also, what is a "skijor"?

I apologize for mispelling the word; skijorer.

Skijorer is where a skier is pulled over the ice by a dog or a couple of dogs. In other words its like dog sledding without the sled.
