    Can you justify it?

Hate to post yet another downer thread, but I have a need to know. Can anyone justify the coaching decision to sit on the ball at the end of the first half of the Iowa game? Did anyone every at any point think that was a good idea?

Personally I can't justify it. But, I think Mac had mentioned that he didn't want any silly mistake to cost them the lead at halftime.

    Re: Can you justify it?

I can see Mac's point, but this has been like the 5th game where he has done that and it might have cost us the game. If we had a decent shot at a 50 yard field goal then I would say he would go for it.

    Re: Can you justify it?

What I can't justify is how the coaching staff didn't pump the D up more before letting them on the field. Or call a time out and slow it down (did we have a time out?) I saw that last hawkeye drive coming a MILE away. Not much time left, we have held em in check all game, just one more quick series and we are in the locker room 14-3. So the D went out and half assed it. Momentum swing. Sitting on the ball did nothing to counter that swing, but let's face it, the damage was already done. Anyone else get a sick feeling that we lost the game right at that point? I bet you did.

    Re: Can you justify it?

I think most fans would have been behind a decision to try for something. Shoot, I'd be surprised to see the % of fans that thought going for that 4th and 10 was a bad idea. I sure wasn't. The fans want the team to go out and TAKE the win. And if not, go down fightin'.

    Re: Can you justify it?

Amen. I had no problem with the 4th down call, and I was screaming for them to take a shot at the end of the half (I was probably only 40 feet right behind Dan at that point, so I was hoping he would heed my advice, lol). We need our coaches to act like they have a pair a little more often.

    Re: Can you justify it?

I did want them to go for it at the end of the half. Yet the second we turn the ball over at the end of the half...the same fans wanting us to go for it would have said "he should have just gotten into the locker room with the lead". Damned if ya do, damned if ya don't.

It's a tough call. At home I ya gotta go. On the road vs. a ranked team like Iowa with the lead and momentum already slipping via the amazing catch...I can see why he sat on it.

Keep in mind, we started the second half well by stopping Iowa and later getting 3 points. It just went downhill from there.

    Re: Can you justify it?

Yeah, he would have been "wrong" either way, but that's he's what he's signed on for. Of course, that's the thing with Mac. We know who he is after 12 years, that's not going to change no matter how much we hollar. As it should be. That's fine.

Me personally, I would have been behind him doing something in that last minute. If something bad happens, so be it.

I don't think its a no win situation. I'd say the majority had little problem with him going for it on 4th down despite us not making it, and that was a riskier decision than trying to get 40 yards with over a minute left.

Yeah, I think trying to get points in that last minute would have sent a good statement. I think fans would be behind that. Shoot, I don't remember exactly, but didn't Ohio State put up some points on Texas at the end of the half?

    Re: Can you justify it?

I agreed with Mac on the call at the end of the second half. Iowa had the momentum. We had the lead and wanted to make sure that we went into halftime with it.

I don't think it was riskier. With the new clock rules a coach must think differently facing a 4th down with about 5 minutes to go. When you factor in the potential 2 changes of posession, that's nearly a minute run-off.

Plus, we had not stopped the Iowa offense much in the 2nd half...so Mac looked at as a "now or never" situation I'm sure.

    Re: Can you justify it?

Wasn't it almost 2 minutes left in the first half when we got the ball back with 3 time outs? Normal teams can drive the field in no time. I will be the first guy on this board backing Coach Mac if he goes for a "statement" drive to end the first half and we turn the ball over. If you have a smart QB turnovers don't happen most of the time anyway.
We miss a fieldgoal and then Iowa gets a crazy catch to setup a touchdown to then watch us then run into the locker room defeated. I don't think ISU is in the position to play conservative. Open the playbook and figure something out is what we need to do.

No, a common misconception. The drive started with 1:14 left on the clock.
