NCAA To Restrict Sport Event Blogging...

I found this over at Slashdot at all places:
Slashdot | NCAA Puts Severe Limits On Sport Event Blogging

    From the linked article:
Techdirt: NCAA Puts Limits On Live Blogging Sports Events
Instead, the NCAA has now instituted special "live-blogging rules" for anyone credentialed to cover NCAA events. The rules change per sport, but they limit how many times you can blog during the course of a game. For baseball: once per inning (not even once per half-inning!). For basketball, it's five times per half, once during half-time, and twice in overtime. Football is three times per quarter and once at half-time. It even covers the more obscure sports: you can only blog 10 times per day at a swimming match, for example. You can see all the details here (pdf).
These rules would only apply to "credentialed" reporters...
This is ridiculous! Anyone of us watching the game on TV or even in the stands can post to this site constantly. I'm not sure what the NCAA is trying to accomplish with this.

Another stupid thing the NCAA can monitor other than athletics.

So this is how the NCAA wastes their time, instead of looking in to real problems like Lucca's.

Plus, how the heck do they think they can monitor every blog on the world wide web, and how would they even enforce it? RIDICULOUS!

"NCAA event" = NCAA tournament or NCAA championship event, not your normal regular-season competitions.

Re: NCAA To Restrict Sport Event Blogging...

It's all about money, period. The NCAA fears that the public will be less inclined to pay for their product (major network contracts, ticket sales, Big 10 network, etc.) if the public can get their information through "free" sources. The NCAA is just trying to protect their BILLIONS of dollars in profit each year.

But remember, the NCAA is most concerned about the development of young athletes, not about making money. Yea...........right. Is it any wonder that the majority of employees at the NCAA national office are lawyers? I'm sorry, but their hypocracy has made me extremely cynical.

Re: NCAA To Restrict Sport Event Blogging...

It never ceases to amaze me how shortsighted some corporations like the NCAA or in the music industry can be when it comes to technology. Their first response is always to attempt to shut it down because they don't understand it or, more specifically, how they can immediately make money off of it.

This is coming from an incident in last year's baseball tournament when they kicked out a reporter from the Louisville Courier-Journal for liveblogging during the game. Ridiculous.

I agree. There will be hundreds of cell phones at those events that will make it capable for anyone who owns one to blog.

There are probably going to be more blogs now that the NCAA has put this out.

Well it looks like ISU will somehow be penalized by this.
