    Tournament Fouls

    I have a friend who will be selecting the referees to work the Div III tourney and he has received the word directly from the director of officials that they intend to clean up the game.

    He indicated that the conferences control their own referees and the NCAA has little control how the conferences games are officiated. That all changes in the NCAA tournament. They have 100% total control over who is picked to call the games and they want to take the physical nature of the game out and make it more about movement then physical dominance.

    The directives from the NCAA is simple - take the physical nature out of the game or the officials will not move forward for additional games.

    I'm worried about our depth but if they do indeed invoke this methodology i think it gives our offense a huge advantage. The way we create mismatches and our philosophy of isolation and drive will create a lot of foul opportunities for whoever they face.

    This would be excellent for us. We CAN get physical and win but I really think our offense shines when our guys can get to the basket without getting mugged.

    Interesting about the conference refs, I have noticed in other conference tournaments that they have the free flow going like in early season games. The big12 and big ten certainly are allowing more contact.
    I think this will be very good for three good guys.

    Agreed - i thought that we got some serious ticky tack fouls on Naz guarding Heslip and that Austin was allowed to get very physical not only on defense but also in rebounding.

    This was supposed to be the direction that the NCAA had given at the beginning of the year and as it got into conference play it seemed to go away and the play became increasingly physical.

    Even if fouls became an issue, i feel ok about our guard depth but our front line depth would be problematic. I would like to get a big lead in that first game and get Gibson in for some extended minutes. I was impressed with Edozies play for the limited amount he was in last night. He seems to produce and at times, i think Ejim and Niang get lazy fouls because they've played like 35 minutes and usually against bigger opponents.

    This team if they get the right draw could make the deepest run in ISU history which would good for the present and the future.

    I hope they mean both offensively and defensively in terms of physical play.

    Watching Big10, if the person dribbling throws his arm out to push a defender away that is a foul. In our conference it is rarely, if ever, called. The most blatant example was in our last game against WV.

    If the refs clamp down I like our chances. I just hope they don't get so stupid that they guys can't play. Seen that in a few games this season.

    Or Heslip all game shoving Naz with both arms when starting a run to a screen?
