Getting rid of my land line question

I'm thinking about getting rid of my land line because I'm getting so much static for one on my cordless phones with all of the wireless stuff in my house (we've tried many different cordless phones) and I'm thinking about going to just our cell phones and getting rid of the land line all together.

Have any of you gotten rid of your land line? Had any problems by doing that?

The only thing I can think of in favor of keeping a land line is to have in case my kids (age 6) need to make an emergency call and being listed in the phone book. Am I missing anything? (I have DSL internet through our local phone company.)

Excellent question. I'd like to see some answers, too. I've been thinking of ditching our land line and using the extra money to upgrade to more channels on a dish.

We've been without a land line for 4 years. No problems. All baby sitters have a cell phone and if they don't, we've left one of ours home with them.

I use vonage. But alot of my friends use Cell phones for all use. They seem to get by fine. Would be tough with kids. If they happened to forget where the cell is or something and an emergency came up I would be worried.

I am not getting rid of my land line. 911 service is scary bad from these services, and that is a feature that is worth the $20 a month.

I haven't had a land line since I was done with college. As for internet I use Mediacom and love it.

Thought about dropping Vonage for qwest for that exact reason. Not a big fan of E911

Re: Getting rid of my land line question

I agree with brianhos, until I know for sure 911 service is going to work with my cell, I'm keeping a landline. Heck, you can get a basic line for less than $20 a month. That's definitely worth the piece of mind.

If you cannot tell the 911 operator exactly where you are, they are not going to know. Like i can dial 911 and not say anything and the police are on their way. Not the case with cells. This is an important thing when you have kids.

Re: Getting rid of my land line question

Or what if the 911 operator thinks you are in a different place than you say because of these phone services? That happend in Ankeny last year, and someone died because the ambulance took too long to get there.

Re: Getting rid of my land line question

I haven't had a land line since 2003. I get my internets thru comcast cable. Haven't had a problem living w/o a land line, and I like one less bill every month.

I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.

Re: Getting rid of my land line question

How many people have had to use 911 to know that it doesn't work? If it didnt work wouldnt that been a major concern of all wireless providers and local authorties...Why would it not work like any other number?

Re: Getting rid of my land line question

I haven't had a land line since 1998 and I've had no problems.

I've called 911 twice in that time, both times to report major accidents I've driven up on and its worked like a charm.

no kids though ... knock on cubicle

I thought cell phones had "locators" on them to tell emergency services where you are when you call 911?
