Don't confuse Fred "expecting zero negativity" with Fred publically defending a 19 year-old kid that may need a confidence boost.

Just because every fan base has it, doesn't mean that it is a good thing.

I don't think Hoiberg was saying that he didn't expect it. He was telling a kid whose problem right now seems to be that he is thinking too much before shooting (one would think because HE KNOWS he is in a slump) to avoid people that are bashing you. And I think that those of us who aren't stupid realize that it is harder to avoid that kind of stuff then you would think.

Again, Hoiberg wasn't calling out Iowa State's fan base in general. Just the bad ones.

And it is probably smart of all of us to stop and think occasionally about the messages we are sending to the players. I, for one, don't want anything that I write publicly to be something I'm not proud of.

    Re: "Bad Fans"

Trust me....Most other universities it is way worse. Is it unacceptable? Of course.
But there are other schools where fans actually want to kill you. And I am not kidding. This probably came down to some drunk dude that should have gone to bed 1 hour earlier that night.
Good luck....we just need to handle KSU and show up to either beat KU or come close. Then go on a nice run after that. Get a 4-5 seed or better and be happy.

yeah because they spend 24 hours a day 7 days a week practicing and going to school.

I haven't seen many of these "bad fans" say anything that wsnt pretty accurate.

maybe it's me....maybe it's because my college playing days were pre Internet.....but shouldn't naysayers tick you off to play better? Not curl up in a ball and be gunshy?

Nothing wrong with a coach calling out jihad fans. If it makes one twit think twice about typing something personally attacking a player, its worth it. Hope he does it again when needed.

And each kid is different, see kids playing ball they make an error in the field, they pretty much are done for the game if you get on them. Other kids they get mad and it makes them only more focused. Confidence is a very difficult thing to manage and needs to be looked at individual by individual.

But your point is valid, lots of idiots out there, not just at ISU.

It's not what you say so much as the delivery. Are you commenting on flaws in his game on a message board, or are you calling him an "overhyped *****" directly on Twitter?

    Re: "Bad Fans"

The best part of this thread are the response that are attempting to defend tweeting at Thomas. Each excuse is so lame. It's one thing to discuss how a player is performing on a radio show or forum, it's a whole another level to contact them personally.

What do they expect to happen? Matt Thomas to read their ignorant analysis and then say to himself 'Thank you random guy on Twitter, you've turned around my season.'

If you are OK with people being ********, then I guess you are right.

Again, I think the goal here is not to be an ***.

Do you really think that Matt Thomas doesn't realize he is in a bit of a slump? Or that Georges didn't realize that going 0-9 wasn't good? They KNOW IT. But reading it or getting direct messages from people who bash you is not helpful.

I just think that we can be critical and realistic without being jerks. And this is just me, but the time when a team most need fan support is when they have lost a few.

His shooting form/release is really the best I have seen in a long time!
He has excellent shooting mechanics much like current Phoenix Suns coach Jeff Hornacek. For whatever reason, I think he has lost some confidence. Believe me, be patient he will be a good one..
I think its overlooked that this may have a great deal to do with the role each had when this season kicked off. Montee had less pressure on him early in the season, I think it allowed him to build up that confidence you are talking about. I'm with you though, I'm not down on Thomas at all, hes certainly not the reason we've lost 3 straight games.

    Re: "Bad Fans"

Most people have twitter set up so it's no different than getting a text. Anytime anybody says something to Matt on twitter, he gets it instantly on his phone. Not sure how that is him "reading the boards."

All this is, is Hoiberg standing up for a guy on his team and trying to inject some confidence into him.

    Re: "Bad Fans"

Going after a player on twitter is stupid and childish.

Like I said before fans come here to calm down after a bad game. Most of the post are just pointing out what the players should already know. People also talk about the team in public setting, should we stop that also.

I don't think I have ever saw a post on here saying so and so sucks or shouldn't be on the team. Yes we talk about when a player struggles, but we talk more about when a player steps up and plays well. I guess if they want the negative talk stopped they need to step it up and win.

Just look at the comments section in most any on-line news story.

In the old days, you knew the world was comprised of a whole bunch of stupid mother****ers and now here they are, loud and proud.

    Re: "Bad Fans"

I don't think that the criticism needs to go anywhere near as far as some posters take it. Seems like the same posters go crazy at the other end of the spectrum too, and start predicting title runs. Must be a lack of emotional control or something. Some of them may certainly be trolls (wishful thinking).

These guys play for my favorite team. I am glad that each and every one of them chose ISU, and I cheer them on through thick and thin. As a fan, I'm really not sure what there is to gain by berating them.
