    Credit score/ID theft protection

Does anybody subscribe to credit check or identity theft protection services?

With the Target identity theft problems, I wonder if it might be worthwhile. We use our credit card for 99% of purchases to get the cash back bonuses. (We pay off the entire balance each month so we aren't paying 18% interest to get $3 cash back bonus).

So far, we haven't found any fraudulent charges, but we did have our card cancelled and reissued.

Target is offering a year subscription for free. Go check out their website. I already signed up. It's super easy.

So is nieman Marcus. There still three other unnamed retailers in the scam. Personally, I would get new credit card each year and never get a debit card.

    Re: Credit score/ID theft protection

I got an email from Target yesterday - I had to reply to it to get a code to use to sign up for the free monitoring.

I quickly signed up this morning and after it was finalized I relayed I spelled my own dang first name wrong. UG! Turns out you can't just log into your account and fix it.

So, called customer service tonight and passed a quiz to prove I'm me and they fixed the spelling.

    Sigh. I need a drink.

    Re: Credit score/ID theft protection

Credit monitoring is a scam. If you're really worried about your identity being stolen, freeze your credit. It costs $10 per credit bureau and it will prevent others from opening accounts/taking loans in your name. The only bad thing is you can't open an account (ant credit line), so if you ever want to open one, just thaw your credit. Just Google Clark Howard credit freeze and his site will guide you through it

And to be clear, when I say it's a scam, I'm referring to services like life lock that charge a monthly fee. I'm not aware of the details Target is offering

    Re: Credit score/ID theft protection

You get one free credit report per year every year from the government. Like, seriously FOR FREE, not "you don't even need a credit card" free. Here: https://www.annualcreditreport.com/index.action Besides, you don't typically need to check it more often than that.

As for ID theft things, I have no experience with those, but I am skeptical of how much good they actually do...
