Ski Trips - where are Fanatics headed this year?

We are expecting baby #2 in a week or two, so that means no Colorado ski trip for me. First time in 5 years I won't be able to hit the slopes. So, I thought I would live vicariously through everyone else this year and hear about ski trips? Places people have gone? How were the conditions? Favorite places visited?

Also, as a shameless plug, I created a quiz on Sporcle of the runs of Keystone. I will make one for Vail next.

Can you name the Ski Runs at Keystone Colorado Quiz by mjones34 - Sporcle Games & Trivia

I am heading out to Denver for work, so naturally, I am heading out two days early and hitting up Keystone this weekend.

Cyclonedave, and few others, are heading out to summit county in late February. I think they're hitting up Keystone, Breck, Vail and maybe A-Basin.

Sounds like fun!! I love Keystone as you can get away from the busy front side and hit some challenging slopes in the back two peaks.

If anyone is planning a trip to CO definitely check out Steamboat, they've gotten dumped trucked with snow the last couple weeks. Was there last week, it was great!

North Peak and Outback are great, hugely underrated. I have skiied everywhere in Colorado and Keystone gets a bad rap because it is a family oriented resort. There is lots of great skiing at all resorts and I do love to ski Steamboat, A-Basin, and Loveland but it's tough to beat Keystone when we have a group. The more timid skiiers can stay on the front side and the rest of us head straight back.

I don't think we will hit Colorado this year. Have a 22 month old in the house and tough to make that long of a trip. However the 7 and 4 year olds want to go skiing pretty bad again so I think we will be hitting up Lutsen. I know it's only about 3-4 hours less driving but with kids that is huge plus we have family in Minnesota that wants to meet us up there and will watch the little one while we ski.

Heading up to Afton Alps next weekend in St. Paul. Great hills.

And I know it's not the greatest place in the big scheme of things, but Sundown just outside of Debuque is actually extremely nice. I thought the Boone bump was all Iowa had, and Sundown impressed me.

Steamboat generally has some of the best snow all year. The Yampa Valley seems to be a snow magnet. I spent a winter living in Steamboat and it seems like it snowed almost every day. Was a great winter but I was ready to see some green towards the end of it.

North peak is amazing. Prospector is one of my favorite runs that gives you a great view. My favorite run is star fire which is steep yet wide and no one is ever on it so you can just fly.

I went out to Colorado skiing about 7 times in my 30's and loved it. Now that I'm in my 40's, half the group have too many health issues to ski. Sucks getting old and knowing that you'll probably never do it again.

thats what scares me...taking a year off. Might be hard to get a group again next year. I hope to do it the next 20-30 years until I can't anymore.

Headed to Utah in a couple of weeks! They've been getting dumped on recently. Went skiing in CO over Thanksgiving. Only about half the runs were open, but any day skiing is better than any day not skiing!

Re: Ski Trips - where are Fanatics headed this year?

Wife and I went out to Lake Tahoe over New Years. Conditions were not so good, as they haven't gotten any snow. We still skied Heavenly, Alpine Meadows and North Star, better than Wilmot hill here in WI. I haven't been to Colorado in years, thinking of seeing if the wife wants to go after busy season. If you ever get the chance go out to to Tahoe do it, there are so many ski resorts in such a small radius.

Hope you all have better luck than we did. Love to be on the slopes.

Had my first experience "skiing the East" last week as I went to Sugarbush mtn in Vermont. Wasn't bad, but definitely made me miss Colorado.

Re: Ski Trips - where are Fanatics headed this year?

I normally do Colorado for a few days every year until I randomly explored going to Utah instead and was flabbergasted. Here was my quick comparison of Colorado vs Utah

-Through Frontier out of CR, I was able to fly to Salt Lake City for about the same super cheap price as flying to Denver ($208 round trip after taxes/fees)
-Airport and pretty much all of Salt Lake City are only 25-35 miles from all the slopes vs Denver airport being 1 hour+ drive toall the slopes
-Rental cars are way cheaper in SLC than Denver
-Lodging is way cheaper in SLC than Colorado because you can just stay in SLC because it is so close to the slopes and hotels there are super cheap
-Lift tickets on average are quite a bit cheaper in Utah than Colorado
-The Ski Resorts on average are higher rated in Utah
-The snow is supposed to be better and deeper in Utah
-I've never been to Utah so it is new and I like going new places

I then took a list at the whole list and asked myself, why am I wanting to go to Colorado again? Seemed like a no-brainer to me. With that said, we are going the 3rd week in February to Utah for 4 days. Not sure exactly what resorts we are skiing yet but are up for suggestions.

As for the Keystone discussion, Keystone is by far my favoite in Colorado and is drastically underrated. A lot of my friends agree too. Love the place and it fits exactly to all the things I love which are fast lifts, some good Blues for cruising, a few good groomed blacks for flying, great views, some AWESOME tree runs (back peak of Keystone is amazing for these), night skiing if I want to, and snowcat access to some back bowls for the dropped off by a helicopter feeling. From what I've skiied so far, which isn't all of them, everyone can say what they want about the other resorts and how great they are, just make sure you give me Keystone.
