I believe you can challenge the spot. But I doubt it would of been overturned. Also something I have been asking on twitter and not getting a answer on is if KC could of challenged the 7 man overload. I believe that teams can challenge to many men on the field.

    Re: Chiefs/Steelers Screwed By Refs

Steelers losses earlier in the season (to the Titans opening day at home, Vikings, Raiders, Ravens {Thanksgiving debacle}, Miami at home) were more an issue to them not making the playoffs then yesterday's games.

Don't let your destiny lie in the hands (or feet, rather) of another team's Field Goal kicker. Should have never come to that. But the way the season went for us (Steelers), it seemed like a fitting end. Just sorry a few of the guys could have at least went out in the post season (Keisel, Clark, others?)

If forward progress was called, then there should have been a whistle, which most definitely was not.
Truly, should have been a fumble, with no return as the runner's helmet came off. Possession had changed prior to his helmet coming off - or maybe it was simultaneous then who the heck knows.

Main thing, Pittsburgh didn't deserve to be in the playoffs, but to have the chance and have it come down to a good kicker making a fairly easy FG in prime conditions (in San Diego with absolutely no wind) is damn painful. Between their season & the Cyclones, I'm ready for no football for a while.

Nothing about forward progress is challengeable. And, as far as the illegal formation penalty, you can't challenge for a penalty that wasn't called. I get what you're saying, but neither of those things are provided for in the current rules.

You're right that they can challenge too many men on the field, but this would be an illegal formation penalty which I'm almost certain isn't reviewable.

Isn't that exactly what the call was, though? Forward progress absolute was called. A whistle isn't required to make that determination, only a ref who decides that the runner's progress was stopped.

So you cannot challenge the spot of the football? Essentially doesn't every play end with forward progress?

Also I know that I had seen too many men on the field challenged before. Just do not remember if it was college or pro.

Who says there was? I didnt quote you. Janny said he thought that to many men on the field was not a challenge able play. I was simply stating that I had seen it challenged this year.

No, a forward progress call is not challengeable. With a tackle, there's an indication when a player is down. Knee, elbow, thigh, etc. That's not the case with forward progress. That's a ref making the call that the player is no longer able to move forward. It's a judgement call. Judgment calls are generally not reviewable in the NFL.

I didn't say that, did I? I said illegal formation penalties weren't challengeable. Too many men on the field is a separate penalty. yes, too many men on the field is challengeable. Sorry for the confusion.

The imbalance is genius. You shouldn't be penalized for 7+ players on one side. It's a dumb rule. An extra player did not make Succop, a solid kicker, miss a field goal. It wasn't even of a terrible distance.

Very true. Steelers made their own bed by being terrible early in the season and not taking care of Baltimore or Miami in the snow.

Still would have been nice to have snuck in since they won and almost everything else worked out.
