lifting the gas hose to get the last few drops

at the pump. am i stupid for thinking the people who do this are stupid? the gas shuts off at the handle and not the top of the gas line right? so if the trigger isn't pulled, no gas is coming out. or am i the idiot here? i've never tested it but the whole thing seems ridiculous regardless

The valve to shut off the flow is in the handle. Lifting the hose does absolutely nothing.

You can move this to in state rivals forum and ask. An Iowa fan pumps my gas for me, he should know the answer.

Re: lifting the gas hose to get the last few drops

When I rode a moped (1979-ish), we could often get a tank from the residuals in the system. Whether it was from the hose or the last squirt no clue...

I lift the handle after it stops but not to get the last few drops. I do it so those last few drops don't dribble onto my car's paint or onto my shoes. Gasoline is a pretty decent paint thinner so I don't like to get it on the car.

I shut the pump off, then pull the trigger. You still get a little gas.

Re: lifting the gas hose to get the last few drops

Worked at a gas station back a few years back and decided to try this one day.

After the pump clicked off, we pressed the pump lever (where the hose sits when not being used) back to the down position, which shuts off the price. We then set the hose on the ground and pressed the lever on the nozzle. Some gas did come out, but nothing I would write home about.

Some pump designs would make this impossible, but it is possible on some pumps. Not worth it at all though...

Re: lifting the gas hose to get the last few drops

I'm one of the idiots that does it. Because I'm also one of the idiot that likes to run down to the fumes. I figure if I can fit another 1/8 gallon in there... that may be the 3 miles I need to roll into the gas station.

The Hawkeyes, who have lost six of their last seven games, were given a No. 11 seed and will be involved in one of the four first-round games by virtue of being one of the last four at-large teams to make the field. “It’s not a &%#$@%* play-in game!’’ McCaffery said when a reporter phrased it that way. McCaffery then hurled a bottle of G2 into the face of the reporter stating "you #$%*&@ idiot!".

Dude, that's a pint. You might want to rethink that.

Re: lifting the gas hose to get the last few drops

If the gas shutoff is in the handle then gas is in the tube all the time. If someone order gas A and the next person orders Gas B from the same hose wouldn't there be gas A still in the hose and into the next person's car?

Also, anyone else NEVER wait for the verbal "pump 4 is on" to start the gas? I wonder why they do that.

He might also want to think about how a new fuel pump will fit in the budget. Now and again fumes driving isn't bad but constant low tank driving can have bad effects.
