It'll be nice to see how Deandre fares against Big XII competition.

It is great to see DeAndre also getting a little love from the media!

He's definitely shown flashes, and I can't believe how good of a rebounder he has been. Just limit some of the turnovers and I say he's definitely in the conversation.

Smart turns it over at a higher rate than Kane does. So if that is the deciding factor, I would say it's safe to say DeAndre is right up there with Smart.

Re: 1. Is DeAndre Kane the Big 12's second-best guard after Marcus Smart?

Smart probably has him on the 3 pt shooting 32% to 25%. It also enables Smart to drive easier than Kane since teams can back off of Kane a little bit at the arc. Despite that, I think Kane has been pretty much just as effective driving.

Great pick-up. We would probably struggle to be above .500 this year without him.

I think Kane's in the conversation for 2nd best guard with Markel Brown and Staten. Staten's putting up some serious numbers, too.

The conference is loaded with guards. I would add Eron Harris for WVU. He is having a McGee type year averaging 19 points/gm while shooting 47% (34-73) on 3P's. Not the all-around game, but as a soph he is going to be a pain.
Two very tough backcourts. Brown and Smart benefit from having each other, as do Harris and Staten.

Re: 1. Is DeAndre Kane the Big 12's second-best guard after Marcus Smart?

Other than Smart, there probably isn't another guard that is putting up the stats and who plays such a crucial role as Kane. He's a beast on the boards, good passer, excellent decision maker.

He drives to the hoop at will and opposing D's have a choice to make:

1- Double down.... Kane is a great passer and very unselfish, so this isn't a great option
    2- Foul
    3- Give up uncontested layups

The only hole in his game obviously is his outside shooting. If he averaged 35% from 3, you'd be looking at a lottery pick.

Absolutely right, although his age would push him down. I really hope he can get hot, as it would do wonders for him, the team, and the program (what a recruiting tool).

Objectively, I would also add consistent intensity on O and D. He is amazing 90% of the time on offense, then gets lackadaisical and throws a few lazy passes that go out of bounds or are easy stolen - happens once or twice every game. And on defense he loses awareness more frequently than I'd like (mostly in transition but occasionally in half-court) and ends up just waiting for a rebound while his man shoots a wide open shot. That would kill us if teams could actually shoot against us (see Akron for first 10 minutes).

With that being said, I love having him on our team. Match-up nightmare
