ISU Defense Rocked against the Zips

I was really thrilled and proud of the D we played last night. Obviously Akron is not a well rounded tour de force on offense. But kudos for shutting Treadwell et al down in the second. It was really fun to watch the teamwork on D- looked like a well-oiled machine. Did CFH change the defense in the second with a different kind of zone?

Re: ISU Defense Rocked against the Zips

Probably get filleted for this view but I think the Def is unsung hero of first 10 games. Each game we come out pretty basic D playing straight up and maybe at 80% intensity. Some games (Auburn for example) that is good enough. Otherwise, a few adjustments at half time and crank up the intensity for the 2nd half.

1/2 the offense in 2nd 1/2 of Akron game came from run outs on turnovers and rebounds as a result of solid D. Don't know that we are going to win any Def awards but that is where our offense is fed.

I witnessed a lot of good rotation.

The best part of the game was seeing Akron get frustrated and pretty much quit during the second half.

Re: ISU Defense Rocked against the Zips

I am still seeing improvement on the defensive end as well. Georges is sometimes lazy, but he knows he has to stay out of foul trouble. Other than that, he is really starting to understand positioning and how to move his guy out towards the perimeter on the entry pass. That will get tougher in conference play, but it's good to see him making adjustments.

We are showing a much higher IQ on defense this season, and I couldn't agree more with the poster that said it is the key to our offense. That isn't a new concept, but one-and-done possessions and outlet passes are this team's best friend.

I think we lucked out based on how many open 3's Akron missed. Had they put those away, the game would have been closer for longer (we still would have won).

A lot of them were open because they were 5 feet behind the line. They were playing right into our hands. 3-pointers are not a high percentage shot (shocker).

There were some of those but I am talking about what seemed like a ton of wide-open threes from the corner.

Akron wanted to play inside. ISU made them play outside. ISU won. They took Akron out of their comfort zone, I think that is, was, and will be the plan all season. Good scouting, good coaching, good execution (and with one day to game plan)!

Re: ISU Defense Rocked against the Zips

I feel like our defense is a little loose early on, especially around the basket. Probably so we don't pick up fouls early. When we need to, we seem to be able to really tighten up and play pretty solid. Not world beater, but pretty good.

Excellent D, they were late in the shot clock on lots of possessions

We did start switching on screens in the second half and pretty much shut them down from there on in.
