    ESPN: Nation's Top 10 Frontcourts - ISU #4

Ranking the nation's top 10 frontcourts - College Basketball - ESPN
    12/23/2013 - By Miles Simon - ESPN.com

    1. Arizona Wildcats
    2. Kansas Jayhawks
    3. Baylor Bears

    4. Iowa State Cyclones
This is a frontcourt that wouldn't have made this list in the preseason but has been outstanding thus far. Fred Hoiberg's starting big men of Melvin Ejim, Georges Niang and Dustin Hogue have really been dominant in leading the Cyclones to an undefeated record. Ejim was only the third player at 6-6 or under to lead the Big 12 in rebounding (9.3 a game). He’s waited for his time to shine after Royce White took the spotlight two seasons ago, and a guard-heavy team in 2012-13 led the way. In addition to his rebounding, he's a solid 3-point shooter as well as an excellent scorer around the rim.

Niang is one of the craftiest, smartest and most skilled bigs in the nation. He brings the ball up the floor at times and initiates the offense -- and he plays the center position. Around the basket he has soft hands and is very creative with his footwork, making up for a lack of athleticism. Hogue is a junior college transfer who is averaging a double-double (12.6 points and 11.1 rebounds per game). His total on the boards is sixth in the country. He can slash to the basket but makes enough 3s to keep defenses honest. He's an excellent athlete and the Cyclones’ best defender.

    5. Louisville Cardinals
    6. Kentucky Wildcats
    7. LSU Tigers
    8. Duke Blue Devils
    9. New Mexico Lobos
    10. North Carolina Tar Heels

I am obviously aware this is an Insider article. I only posted information applicable to Iowa State. The write up has paragraphs on each team but I did not include them.

I think Iowa is more derpth than depth, hence their exclusion from the list.

Utah Utes, Illinois Illini. The University of Pennsylvania thought about following this pattern by calling themselves the Pennsylvania Pencils. However, they were afraid their students would start chanting "We're No. 2"

Anyone catch in yesterday's game when the commentator said that "Niang has the vertical of a credit card"?

    Re: ESPN: Nation's Top 10 Frontcourts - ISU #4

I don't think anybody on here would say Niang is an incredible athlete... He's a "Greg Maddux" of a post. Doesn't have incredibly stuff physically, but he's just incredibly crafty--he out-thinks and -maneuvers the poor defenders in front of him.

Incredible to see what was the (assumed) weakness of the team this year turning into a strength, our offense being based on Niang's shiftiness and Ejim and Hogue's ability to pick up points on trash rebounds and energy alone.

It's really helped cover for some youthful guard play (Morris and Thomas are going to be studs, but they're still true freshmen right now), shaky three-point and free-throw shooting (by Fred standards), and vaulted what might have been an ORV team into #14 as of today.

    Big 12 teams 2, 3, and 4. Although I think I would put KU number 1.

This is going to be a very interesting Big 12 season. KU might have the most competition that they have had in years.
