    How do you define Depth?

Niang is the 5th Cyclone to win big 12 player of the week honors. That's what I want for Depth, a team where any guy can take over a game.

Re: How do you define Depth?

As I read on a different thread, there's a difference between having depth and just playing a lot of guys.

Re: How do you define Depth?

To me, good depth is having about 8 guys you can play in different mixtures without seeing a drop off. I think that is what we have. Right now, I think once you get to guys like SDW, Edozie and Percy you begin to see a little bit of that drop off. They can come in and give valuable minutes, but the team just doesn't flow like it does with the other guys.

That's what I don't get about Iowa's depth argument. Olaseni can really play, and should start over Woodbury. Uthoff is capable but not great. But when you get Uthoff, Olaseni, Clemmons, McCabe and Jok out on the floor together I think you really see a drop in output.

I assume you are including Hallie Christofferson in that number.

Depth is returning a bunch of players who lost a lot the previous year.

This is where I have an issue with the depth discussion. If your 8th player is just as good as your #1 player... then you have a problem. That or else you are Kentucky.

I never said our #8 guy is as good as our #1 guy. What I'm saying is we can go 7-8 guys deep without it causing too much disruption to our offensive flow and the defense side of the ball. When we sub in Naz or Monte, it doesn't take us out of our game. While they may not be as individually talented as Kane, Thomas, etc., we are able to maintain just as well with them in the game. When Edozie or SDW or Percy come in, I think that's when you notice some issues. The flow just isn't there. The same could be said for Booker last year. He'd give us some good minutes, but offesnively things just weren't the same.

Someone posted this earlier when discussing out depth versus Iowa's. "I'd rather have 7 dimes than 10 nickels."

That pretty much sums it up.

The only time it's nice to have more than 8 play is the conference tournament because you play consecutive days.
