    What to do in Cozumel

Sorry, going to be "that guy" for a minute
Won a 5 day trip to Cozumel through work for late February. Truth be told, vacations on the beach aren't really my thing. I'm a big fan of history and experiencing local culture. Since CF is the place I come for all my knowledge, I'm wondering what you guys have found is worth doing down there?

If you want to scuba dive, Cozumel is ranked one of the best place for scuba diving.

We rented a car and drove to the East side of the Island one day. There is a great little bar there and we met some very colorful locals. I think there are some smaller ruins on the island but the main ones are on the mainland. Tulum is very cool.

Re: What to do in Cozumel

The beaches are all crushed coral, so you'll need water socks if you don't do a "guided" tour. If you don't want to spend the money on scuba diving, don't waste it on a guided snorkeling tour either. Apparently you can rent from the locals for far less and spend as much time as you like. A lot of the island is dumpy, so don't do a mountain bike tour either. Basically, I don't know what you should do since I felt my guided tour was crap. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. Maybe the scuba diving is worth it.

If you like history, you should spend the time & money to bus inland on the Yucatan peninsula and tour some Maya ruins. I got to swim in a royal "cenote." That was pretty cool. The one I was in was loaded with tetras- like the kind you'd see in a local aquarium shop. They weren't shy at all; I had to be careful not to swallow one.

I went on a guided 4 wheeler tour through the jungle. If you plan on doing this bring a bandanna to cover your face. I also went on a catamaran/snorkeling day trip.

Our group really enjoy Chankanaab Park. I would look into that if you get a chance.

If you go see the ruins take bug spray I got eaten up when I went. We rented a jeep and drove around the back side of the island.

Re: What to do in Cozumel

I've never been to Cozumel, but on the mainland, I agree with checking out some Mayan ruins. Tulum isn't too far and is cool to see. I've heard the inland ones are bigger and better but haven't done them. Tulum was plenty for me to get a sense of it.

The other place I've been and liked was Puerto Morelos. It's less touristy than Cancun or Playa del Carmen with more of a local fishing village feel. Quite a few shops and restaurants, has a nice beach and the local fishermen are happy to take you fishing or snorkeling.

Re: What to do in Cozumel

Went on a cruise down to Cozumel. All of the options through the cruise were expensive, but we found a resort/beach called Mr. Sancho's. It was way cheaper, all you can drink and eat (menu food was pretty good, we just got one of every appetizer) for as long as your their. They had add-on's you could do, like snorkel, water inflatable course. They also came around with parrots and took your picture for free, but had to pay for the picture if you want it.

Never pay full price for anything, they love to bargain, its part of their culture.

If you're going to be there for 5 days, I'd highly suggest Mr. Sancho's. I thought about just staying there for a day or 2 and just flying home... BTW they have Cuban's down there, but there are a ton of fakes.

ditto - guy grilled fresh octopus for us. Cold beer. He had an Iguana named Elvis that would sit on your shoulder wearing a sombrero for a picture. This was 16 years ago though.

The Iguanas are UNREAL! Skip the ruins, they are ruined. Go to town and eat once.

Drink. Have sex. Eat. Sleep. Repeat.
