    DirecTV Ice Damage?

Is anybody else having problems getting DTV? I can't get anything on certain channels and get the 771 message. I checked for ice and deiced everything, tried resetting the box, etc and no such luck. Sat 101 is fine but the others are having probs getting signals. I searched online and it seems like others across the country with no ice problems are also having the problem - most on the HR20/21 boxes.

Any problems on any of your DTV channels?

The evil empire back east may be affecting the signal in the West Des Moines area. Their AD was seen driving in the area recently with a big antenna on top of his Bartamobile. He had a big smirk on his face.

    Ho Ho Ho.

All my channels seem to be working fine, but I do not get the new HD stuff.

    Re: DirecTV gone kaput?

I did notice this the other day when looking for info on DSM locals in HD...

Eleven Additional Local HD Markets Named; More than 75 Percent of U.S. Television Homes Will have Access to Local HD Channels from DIRECTV

EL SEGUNDO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 5, 2007--Continuing its momentum for delivering the best quality HD programming available, DIRECTV (NASDAQTV) will offer local HD broadcast networks in 76 markets, representing more than 75 percent of U.S. TV households, when it rolls out 11 additional local HD markets by mid-2008. DIRECTV began the rollout with the launch of HD local channels in the Flint, Mich. and Waco, Texas designated market areas last week.

DIRECTV will deliver HD programming from each of the primary broadcast networks - ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC - where available, to customers who subscribe to any TOTAL CHOICE(R) programming package that offers local channels. DIRECTV HD customers will continue to pay only a $9.99 access fee, allowing them to receive DIRECTV's premier HD technology and all channels broadcast in HD that are tied to their particular base programming package.

The 11 local markets to receive HD programming from DIRECTV include:

    -- Albany/Schenectady/Troy, N.Y. -- Paducah, Ky.
    -- Cedar Rapids/Waterloo, Iowa -- Tucson, Ariz.
    -- Flint/Saginaw/Bay City, Mich. -- Waco/Temple/Bryan, Texas
    -- Lincoln/Hastings, Neb. -- Wichita/Hutchinson, Kan.
    -- Louisville, Ky. -- Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Pa.
    -- Omaha, Neb.
"While offering the most quality national HD channels is important, we believe that it is equally important to deliver popular local HD programming that will give our customers the most comprehensive HD experience available," said Derek Chang, executive vice president, Content Strategy and Development, DIRECTV, Inc. "Delivering local channels in HD to 76 markets will solidify our position as a leader in HD and enables us to compete even more aggressively with cable providers across the country."

Information regarding the full DIRECTV HD programming lineup, which includes 87 national HD channels, and details on receiving equipment needed for the new DIRECTV HD services, are available by calling 1-800-DIRECTV or visiting directv.com.

    Re: DirecTV gone kaput?

That sucks. Must be a bad LNB from water getting in it and freezing or something. The roof is all ice so I could only get next to it on a ladder and it looked alright but obviously I wouldn't be able to tell if the LNB is bad.

That is about the only remaining reason I am still with cable. The fact that the offices are local as well as the technicians.

Directv has local techs all over the place. One lives about 3 miles from me.

    Re: DirecTV Ice Damage?

Do they just not have enough of them to take 2 weeks to be able to check out a problem? It makes sense that they have techs everywhere, independent contractors just like the cable installers probably. It just seems like I see more Comcast guys around the TC area then I do any of the dish/directTV guys.

    Re: DirecTV Ice Damage?

Might just need to be re-aimed, if it's only on the Ka channels. The Ka beams are considerably smaller than the Ku beams. Ice could have affected the dish ever so slightly. Is it just HD channels that are having problems? And if so, which ones?

Just FYI, there isn't a "771" satellite or transponder, it's an error message when a tuner cannot pick up the signal for the selected channel. DirecTV has satellites at 101, 110 and 119 degrees in the Ku band, and 103 and 99 degrees in the Ka band. All of the new Hi-def channels (mpeg4) are on the 103 and 99 birds.

Maybe I am just lucky, but I had an issue with my service and got a guy out the next morning. Not only did he find the issue, he noticed that I needed the new dish and box to meet the new HD standards. So, instead of having me wait to get a refurbished box from Directv, he pulled a new dish and box off the truck and set me up. He then called into the tech support number and had it billed so I wasn't charged, otherwise I would have gotten a $75 fee on my next bill. Now I didn't know about how any of this worked and wouldn't have questioned the bill at all.

I love Directv. 1968 with Tom Brokaw looks awsome in HD.
