    Re: Favorite for OC job

I'm fine with promoting K and bringing F in as a position coach. As a far as F posting on CF, those days are gone.

Why did Coach K go to Arky as a OL coach and not as an OC?

    Re: Favorite for OC job

I think the million dollar question I'd love to ask CPR if I could is: Is running the Pistol the best system to win at ISU? If so, why? Do we have the right personnel? If so, Coach K is the man for us.

Personally, due to the bad weather in Ames at the end of the year, I liked Steve Loney's offenses the best of any OC we had in the days of Lane D, Jack W, Seneca etc. We had a great passing attack, rolled Seneca & Sage out of the pocket a lot where he could throw the ball downfield 15-25 yards, or scramble & slide if needed, without all the read option stuff that is getting our QB's killed. All while having a big powerful back that could run off tackle consistently for 4-5 yards a pop even in bad weather (rest in peace Ennis Haywood). Blended in some misdirection with Lane on reverses. Loved that offense.

I admit I don't know enough about the true Pistol to even comment on whether it is right for us or not...maybe we can do the same thing with it as Loney did, just in a different way? I thought Steve was ahead of his time. I do know I couldn't figure out what we were doing this year...seemed like "calling plays" vs. running a system (gut feel). No tempo in our offense at all. We didn't dictate to the defense, we were play takers it seemed, not play makers. Hopefully that changes.

Because Bobby Petrino was the real OC, but his brother had the title. Once Bobby left the offense fell apart, along with the team. I think Coach K saw a chance to coach in the SEC and jumped at it, even if it was a step down in title

Yeah. Petrino is an offensive genius. It was another coach to learn under also.

Well, that at least let us know that Coach K is a candidate for the OC position.

    Re: Favorite for OC job

Don't let the mess of Mess, the major lack of experience of the team, and constant injuries of the OL plus nagging injury of Richardson cloud your judgment of coach K. Honestly we'd probably be lucky to hire someone better. Last year he would have been reguarded as a great pickup. And be still would be.

Ault and Petrino are a couple of offensive geniuses who both wanted him on their staff. Just think of his year here as a jump start. He's got some familiarity with what he has to play with year one now.

I get the feeling we almost HAVE to hire coach K. He's probably conducting the interviews for QB coach...

    Re: Favorite for OC job

It would be awesome if we could get rid of Bliel and hire back Messingham as TE coach. He was a great position coach, but I'm guessing him returning in any form this year is out of the cards.

So...Coach K for OC and OL coach and Sage as QB coach? OK let's do it!

Not necessarily. Lots of spreads utilize the pistol formation. We just want a guy who will run the pistol majority if not all the time. Coach K would be a smart hire if we want to move towards the pistol full time. But if we find a pistol OC who is a stud QB coach too, then you probably need to go with that guy.

If Klenakis is a strong candidate, I'm not sure why he wasn't promoted in-season. That move would have been greatly supported at mid-season, but won't be received with much excitement now. Not a great PR move. Of course, if Klenakis produces immediately results we'll all quickly forget!

CPR has said that his experience with mid season coaching changes is that it usually isn't positive. He probably wanted to stick with Mess to see if the team could turn it around. When the team became ineligible for a bowl game then what's the point of making a coaching change then? If he wanted CK as the next OC CPR isn't putting him in a position to succeed at that point.

I look at it more as bringing that position group up to snuff.
Nothing says you can't still throw the ball a lot.
