    World Cup Group Draw

The moment of truth happens tomorrow (Friday). For those that haven't seen the pots yet, here they are:

Pot 1 (seeded teams): Brazil, Spain, Germany, Argentina, Colombia, Belgium, Switzerland and Uruguay

Pot 2 (Africa/South America): Algeria, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria, Chile and Ecuador

Pot 3 (Asia/North and Central America): United States, Costa Rica, Honduras, Mexico, Australia, Iran, Japan and South Korea

Pot 4 (Europe): Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, England, France, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal and Russia.

In the simplest terms, every group will be made up of 4 teams, one drawn from each of the pots. There are a couple of quirks thrown into the draw which are covered nicely here:

There will most likely be multiple groups of death in this WC when you look at the squads in Pot 1 and Pot 4. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds.

Can you summarize how they go from the pots to the groups? Yes, I'm lazy.

It's pretty simple, every group is made up of 4 teams, 1 drawn from each pot (with some slight wrinkles because of the uneven pots).

Pot 1 should have all the best teams and then pots 2,3, and 4 are from the different regions so that a group doesn't consist of the top 4 teams or a bunch of teams from the same region or anything like that.

So theoretically we could get Spain/Germany/Argentina/Brazil out of Pot 1, and then have someone like Netherlands/England/Italy/France/Portugal move to Pot 2 and draw them and then get one of the left overs of that group from Pot 4?

Im glad the US has had some success against European teams this past cycle. It hope fully will pay off in the World Cup. At this stage there are rarely any easy games.

If you're bored and want to see possible group simulations you can follow this link. It follows the rules set out by FIFA. From doing it a few times I've noticed there are usually 2 great groups and 1 really easy group.

Something like this is definitely possible with the caveat that there cannot be 3 teams from Europe in the same group. Even given that stipulation there is still the possibility of a group containing Brazil, Netherlands, USA, and Italy forming.

    Re: World Cup Group Draw

Why is Switzerland in pot 1. Seems like the Netherlands is more deserving. But I didn't pay close enough attention to European qualifying.

No matter what we'll win it all. I hope all of your expectations are as reasonable as mine.

I could be wrong but I think it's just based on FIFA rankings, top 7 plus Brazil. Looks like they might have used the October rankings.

7 wins and 3 draws in their 10 matches in UEFA qualifying pushed them to the No. 7 spot in the October FIFA rankings. If I recall, they were drawn into a fairly easy group in UEFA with Iceland being the second best team in their group. You could make a pretty good case for both Italy and the Netherlands being better sides, but weird stuff happens when FIFA insists on emphasizing recent results to such an extreme in their rankings.
