That's about as good of a draw as we could have hoped for. Colorado just got in, there are harder seeded teams than Minnesota to have to potentially play, and the site is relatively close.

I've ranted enought about Nolan; don't see why she got the time she did - she has NO mobility - and other teams love to go right at her.

Plus, it is hard to do well with a new setter; jury is still out on Hudson. We did not pass well at all, but neither were we very imaginative in our sets. But this is her first year starting.

Plus Hurtt frustrates the heck out of me. She has a rocket of an arm, but tips and taps so often. When she does that, she is jus setting up the other team to drive it riught back at us.

Finally, something was out of sync with the team, because Kristen was off - that is not like her at all. To me, that speaks volumes and means it is a team thing going on and not just individual play.

BUT, and this is a big BUT, our recruiting has been excellent, Knuth and Kuhrt improved hugely and we have some great additions next year. Like most of you, I am disappointed with what happened, but I still have confidence in CJL and I can see a great future ahead. Too bad this year has been a bit disappointing.

And another BUT, they can still do a lot damage at the t'ment if.....
We did better than the ahem...football team though...

At the Pavillion on UofM campus again? Need a get-together spot for fans. Sally's, our usual NCAA spot on campus, is closed for rebuilding.

I don't think the year has been a mystery.

new setter. poor conditioning. Bad blocking fundamentals. Being too aggressive with serving at times. Relying too much on a freshman, then wearing her out.

If our worst year is this, I am not upset. But, I do think that coach needs to face facts that she needs her own S&C like BF did.

In the end, I don't think it was our in system play that hurt us, but in the past we have gotten used to ISU as being a great rally team. Rarely this year, did this team win long rallies, and became a tip/push over the net team.

didn't we get that new asst. coach this year who was going to be all about the blocking? I would say that has not happened.......dead last in the Big 12 just like last year (or maybe we were 2nd to last in 2012).

So, is anyone coming up to watch? I will be at the Colorado match.

Probably too short of notice and inconvenient time to set up an official event via ISUAA.

As far as I know, I will be there for the Friday match. Can't stay for Saturday, regardless of what happens. But it's too close to not go to the 1st round.

A mystery, yes and no. I'd generally agree with these points. We forget how young this team is.

Hudson got little experience at setter last year. With Landwehr, we had the Big 12's best setter. Can't really replace that, and no fault of Hudson. In fact, look at the statistics attached, and setting seems okay. I cut/pasted the stats from 2012 and 2013 from cyclones.com and did some quick comparisons.

Looking at stats, in comparison with last year, serving probably didn't help us overall, despite the increase in aces.

Blocking errors also hurt us this year.

Based on interview comments, I'm guessing CJL would point to passing, playing in system, and decision-making as key factors. The stats don't directly tell that story. Seems like we received the ball okay compared to last year, but it's likely the pass was not as good.

Again, how do you replace Hockaday's experience? CJL said she was the best passer she's seen in the game. No fault of our current young players.

It is interesting to look at the stats for number of sets to win a match and set numbers won. The percentage of first sets won was lower this year. Maybe inexperience. Maybe took time to figure out the opponent and use the scouting report. We had juniors and seniors leading the way last year -- only two seniors this year, sometimes only one (none?) on the floor.

Also, we didn't take as many matches to 4 and 5 sets, and those that we did, our four-set winning percentage was lower. There are many ways to interpret that, but one could be the other bug that CJL has mentioned: sustaining. Sustaining the level of play was frustrating all season. Whether the set won-loss stats bear that out, and whether that is due to conditioning or inexperience, who knows.

Interestingly, the stats show many similar numbers as last year, despite the difference in the feel of the seasons.

All in all, the stats show this team has the potential for post-season success!

It's interesting that winning the first set, correlates to over-all record pretty closely.
