This game was lost at the end of the first half.

I've lost track of how many times our defense has surrendered a touchdown at the end of the first half. If we could have stopped Iowa on that possession, we would have been in excellent shape.

I know there has been a lot of criticism of Stevie Hicks but he played extremely well today. I don't understand not giving him some carries with 5:25 to go in the game.

I stand by my prediction of a 6-6 season this year. Losses to Texas, NU, OU, TT and pick one of KU, KSU, MU, or CU. Next year is scary given the same schedule + the loss of all the seniors particularly on the offensive line. Missing out on the B12 North Championships the last two years stings even more when you consider it may be years before we ever get another shot at it.

Re: This game was lost at the end of the first half.

    1. Poor tackling, little pressure on Tate, and sloopy playing during the last Iowa drive of the first half, set a poor standard for the second half.
    2. Not trying to move the ball at the end of the first half may have seemed to be a conservative approach, but it influenced the second half.
    3. This was the time for agressive decision making. The chance for success at that time was much greater than going for a first down on the 4th down in the fourth quarter.
    4. The players seemed to tiring but were working hard in the fourth quarter. The coaches seemed to try to open up the offense in the fourth quarter after Iowa had the upper hand.
    5. Rather than blame the defensive coordinator, I think that the problem is lacking of recruiting of defensive linemen. I know that recruiting defense linemen is very difficult, but the effort must be stepped up.

These are the observations of an amateur who has followed Iowa state from afar since 1954.

Iowa State will always have a tough time. The state of Iowa is run by small town lawyers with small minds.

The game was lost with the game plan. It looked just like the Nebraska game from last year. We must like a slow death. Tate did not complete a pass for longer that 8 yards. But, we continue to give the receivers a 8-10 yard cussion. We are way too conservative. Offensively, throw the ball down the field. Dinky, dinky, doo, seems to work for our opponents but it doesn't work for us.

Re: This game was lost at the end of the first half.

I agree, that clearly was the point where momentum changed. Some other points:

    1. No big play threats on offense at all. Obviously everyone is double teaming Blythe, and nobody else is a threat at all. There is nobody on the team (at least who is playing) who can make someone miss or break a few tackles.

    2. Everyone seemed to be solid, but nobody really stood out at all. If it hadnt of been for the Jackson kick return to open the game and the following touchdown pass/reception, there probably wouldnt have been any real highlights at all for the clones.

    3. Iowa really played well, this is the first year that i have really come away from the Iowa/ISU game impressed with Iowa in a long time. If they can keep this up they will really be a good team this year.

    4. There is no offensive consistency at all. Nothing seems reliable over a whole game.

I was thinking the same thing in the 2nd half! Nebraska flashbacks...

In a game where the wind was an obvious factor, it is crucial to get the most out of the possessions when the wind is at your back. Our offense had just driven the ball down Iowa's throat on the previous possession. This was the time to strike back, yet we pat ourselves on the back and head for the lockers. Game over.

After giving Iowa time to adjust, we come out of half and score three points. Great philosophy.

Great points. Also raises a question: Why take the wind in the third quarter instead of the fourth?

I think the wind was out of the sails after Chandler's big catch. I didn't see much out of anybody after that.

I agree. I thought that ball was headed the other way and if it would have...I think we'd be celebrating today.

I said in a separate post that was the play of the day...and clearly...it was.

Re: This game was lost at the end of the first half.

The more I think about the end of the first half the more ****** I become. We had Iowa 14-3 and to their credit they fought back and how did we respond? We took a knee, that was the time to stand up and make a statement that ISU INTENDS TO WIN!

Some have argued that we might have a turnover, problem is the staff works hard at teaching the players to protect the ball and by in large they have done a good job, saying they cannot be trusted in the 2 minute drill with a lead cannot be good the morale of the team.

When Iowa threw that punch we needed to punch back not take a knee!!!
