Why are the QB's taking so much slack and not the O-line?

Just wanted to try and get an open discussion on why people aren't pointing more fingers at the offensive line for whats been going on with our offense? I realize there were many injuries, but we got beat around quite a bit this year. Sam is injured most likely because of all the hits he had to take from the line leaking. Grant had really happy feet and played like a strung out rookie while being beat on by good defenses.

Our only wins came against teams where our lines beat the other team's lines.

    Flak?

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

Re: Why are the QB's taking so much slack and not the O-line?

There are lots of things wrong with the ISU offense, that is pretty obvious. The OL gets some slack because they did have an unbelievably bad year with injuries, and the OL really thrives on continuity.

The QBs did not have a lot of help from the line, but they also missed a lot of chances to complete passes down field when they did have time, so in a sense they were part of the reason teams put everyone within 5 yards of the LOS. The other causes were the OL not playing well and an OC who refused to attack the middle of the field when team rolled their safeties up and went into single coverage.

The OL will be better in 2014. The QBs might be better with a better position coach and a better OC.

Anyone that think that the OC is not a major part of the problem is kidding themselves.

Re: Why are the QB's taking so much slack and not the O-line?

    Because:

    Dika
    Graham
    Farniok
    Gannon
    Tuftee
    Lalk
have all been hurt. Your starting five would have been 5 out of those six and the next one is the first one in. Burton, Omoile and Dunning really shouldn't have had to play that much this year. Also, Lichtenburg got hurt.

It's all snark from here on out

None of the O-linemen threw bounce passes to open receivers.

As has the oline - due to injuries - and the QB we counted on - due to injuries. What seems so easy to comprehend always ends up in the same spot. Messingham has to answer for the offense but it can't be done in a vacuum without factoring in everything else. And I'm in the category that we need a change at OC. Packers offensive coordinator answering for everything? Falcons? Houston? Florida Gators? It's far too easy in alot of people's minds.

Why are we limiting this to one season? We have multiple seasons of data suggesting blaming the OL is the easy target. We had NFL guys and several other good Big 12 linemen and the offense was average at best. S&C? I wish it was a simple case of guys getting blown-up.

Agreed. But at the same time, that playing experience will pay off going into next year. Lichtenburg and Tuftee are the only seniors we lose, and neither really played a lot this year. If the line can stay healthy next year, then we should expect much better play from the QB position no matter who gets the job.

    This is Ophion speaking.

Re: Why are the QB's taking so much slack and not the O-line?

To win in football, you need to be able to beat the guy across from you more often than not. We haven't won the individual battles this year on either the OL or the DL, but hopefully they've learned things they can apply to their game for games in the future that enable them to be successful.

We spend an awful lot of time around here complaining about scheme or player development. At some point players need to make plays in order to win games. We haven't had consistent playmakers this year and the result is what it is.
